70840, need help with my turbo!!
Posted by spool, May-12-04 09:24 AM
i have the hrc stage 2 kit with fmic and its great til now..well i've been out of town for 3 days and when i got back started the car today and let it warm up(5 mins)looked behind me started seeing alot of white smoke..alot of white smoke!! turn the car off and checked under the hood couldn't see anything different but as i looked at the turbo saw some smoke comming out of it.the downpipe was covered in oil and it looks like it was comming from the oil drain line.so i removed the intercooler pipe out of the turbo and the pipe with the k&n filter and checked the turbo. oil was in the inlet and also on the other side where the intercoler pip was conected.with the pipes unhooked i started the car and reved it up some and oil started shooting out of both outlet of the turbo but more from the intercooler side. this is begining to freak me out more because of the white smoke comming from the exhuast. what do you guys think? is the turbo still good? the kit is like a month old and the turbo is still under warrenty.i don't know to do or if i should even drive the car still..let me know what you guys think.

sounds like a blown oil seal in the turbo, dont recall the right terminology im sure someone else will jump in and say it... I've only heard of this happening when you've got TOO MUCH oil pressure going through it..

I would get on the phone with HRC immediately...

have you tried tracing the leak while the engine is running/revved?

my turbo oil seal?..so do you think the turbo is bad? its like 3 weeks old and i did call hrc they said it to new to be a bad turbo. the car drives and idels fine(regular driving no boosting) but its smoke real bad i was afraid that it was my head gasket but i'm not sure..i hope not though.could my oil drain line be clogged?becuase alot of oil shoots out of the turbo.

Oil shouldn't be shooting out of the turbo...under any circumstances. Perhaps you have a clogged drain line and this is causing the oil pressure to build up in the turbo center section (pushing oil past the seals and into the turbine and compressor housings). Or, you got a new turbo with bad seals. You can see the guts of your HRC 16G here:

If you look through the pics, you will find the o-ring seals and will understand how the oil is leaking.

well i sent my turbo into hrc to see if there was anything wrong with my turbo.i looked at my pcv valve today and it lookes like it was clogged.would a clogged pcv valve cause any problems or cause any smoke from the exhuast? sorrie for the noob question.

The smoke is from the burning oil ... in case you didn't put that together yet. Once you figure out why the oil is shooting out, the smoke will stop. It's either the turbo (which, you did the right thing by sending it to HRC) or something clogged. The PCV may be your answer. Unclog it and wait for your turbo to come back.

i know i'm burning oil but the smoke that is comming out of my exhuast is white in color not blue and white smoke is not good and it worries me.is it possible to blow a hg or ring land just warming up ur car.cause the car drove fine before i went outta town.it idels fine and drove fine but it just blows white smokes..wierd..i don't want to have to rebuild if i don't have to.guess i'll have to see when the turbo comes back.

I had this same problem, and as someone already suggested, check your return hose to make sure the oil is flowing freely. With mine, the return fitting on the oil pan loosened a bit and rotated which kinked the return line just a bit. It was enought to increase the pressure in the turbo. I simply corrected that oil fitting ( welded) replaced the line and all was peachy.
