70479, gauges:decisions, decisions Posted by 95venge, May-06-04 12:39 PM
Welp, thanx to all the awesome info on this board from everyone I finally ordered my HRC stage II and most of the other accessories, woo hoo!:thumbsup I've got everything sorted out now except for these gauges. I can't make up my mind on which brand of gauges to get. I want ones that perform great w/out any problems (and look good if possible) and also good quality probes for egt and whatnot. I've been reading about people sayin get Autometer or Greddy or other ones but i just can't decide. :wallbash You guys want to help me make up my mind? Thanx a lot!

Autometer has pretty good warrenties.

I prefer Autometer. Greddy anything is too damned expensive IMO.
*/edit*
Except the boost gauges., I just don't like the way the Autometer boost gauges read. I have a VDO boost gauge and Autometer everything else.

Yah Greddy makes pretty much the best stuff, but they're so overpriced, I'd never buy one. Also I hate metric gauges. If you can get a greddy EGT probe for your Autometer gauge, that would be ideal.
Besides Greddy, in my experience, EGT: Autometer is good, VDO is horrid Boost: VDO is great, Autometer is bad

Why do you guys hate the autometer boost gauge?

Imo the best choice out right now is DEFI. Great guages, easy to ready and they look very nice. They are in the same price ballpark as the greddy guage. Don't over pay for the greddy egt probe, get a tre probe. Equally as responsive and half the price.

Defi gauges are AWESOME. Best looking gauges, ever.
AFAIK, the purchase of a Defi control unit is required if you want to use the gauges. The Defi gauges are also a good deal more expensive than the GReddy gauges.
GReddy gauges run around $150-160 for the basic ones, and about $180-200 for the peak/hold/warning ones.
Defi gauges run around $200-250 for the gauges, and you have to spend about $100-130 for the control unit. IMO, these are probably some of the highest quality gauges on the market.
Autometer gauges are cheap. I think all of the mechanical ones are under $75, and all of the electric ones can be found for under $150.
Anyways, yes, you get what you pay for. I used to have all Autometer gauges until my car was broken into. Most of them were stolen, only the Autometer Ultra-lite electric fuel pressure gauge survived the wrath of the hooligans from Lowell. I decided not to replace the S-AFC so that gave me some extra cash to buy a nice set of GReddy gauges.

Hold an Autometer gauge in one hand. Hold a GReddy gauge in the other hand. You will understand and will probably be happy that you spent the extra cash.

So it looks like Autometer for the price and VDO or Greddy for boost. And Chad, where can I pick up a TRE probe? From the sound of it that'd be my best choice. Thanx again! */edit* Yeah those DEFI gauges look pretty sweet, along w/ the Greddy ones, but I didn't plan on spending over $500 on gauges if I didn't have to. I don't know, I just want to make up my mind and get these gauges ordered by tomorrow, ya know what I mean.
Oh and one more thing, you guys think it would be better to get 52mm or 60mm gauges?:shrug

i use the new FAZE and AC Autotechnic s7 gauges and i like them. i used to have autometer but decided to switch it up. work about the same really but like others said, i wasnt feeling the autometer boost gauge. i like my ac auto boost gauge. they look sweet too unlike the boring orange light up autometer gauges. but autometer is deff good gauges. look into some faze or ac autotechnic if ya wanna. cheaper than autometer and exact same quality. good warranty as well.

Another option to look into would be digital gauges from Dynotune or Dakota Digital.

Actually, DEFI has a new series of analog gauges, which do not require a computer to use them..Most of the gauges are around 110-200..I believe its the "D" series gauges..
Ehh..here is the link:

Basically their way of saying they are electrical gauges, not mechanical. The D series of these gauges, have their own sensor, and you connect wires from the sensor to the gauge..

OMG Those gauges are nice! I was thinking analog meant mechanical.
