70081, Some turbo-ing basic Qs...
Posted by pyro45, Apr-29-04 04:25 PM
Hi guys, we're turbo-ing a 97 Talon ESI and we're pretty well off on our turbo tech but there are just a few little things we've been having problems finding good answers to. I hope you guys can give us a little info.

#1 We're going to start with a T25, and we're wondering if we can mount the turbo backwards with its inlets on the right side or do we have to rig some sort of crazy intercooler pipes into the left side?

#2 Where can we get a decent manifold? New or used(preferably used and cheap)

#3 Will a stock turbo DSM downpipe work?

Thanks alot for the help guys, i'm sorry if post is too low tech for this forum but it seemed the right place to put it, please feel free to move it to a more appropriate place if it seems like a good idea.

Thanks again.

1- you will probably have to rig up some pipes for the left side.
2- look on ebay for a manifold, they have some good header manifolds on there $200 bucks with lifetime warranty. star manifold suck, dont buy a star one, hahns are good, look for one of those if you can .. check www.howellautomotive.com ... not sure if they have any but they have alot for us.
3- and i dont think a stock downpipe will work. but i am not positive.

Doesn't really matter. You're going to be fabricating intercooler piping anyway. Mount/clock the turbo anyway you see fit.

PM forums.2gnt.com/dcboard.php?az=user_profiles&u_id=101628. He makes custom manifolds.

No. Not without fabrication.

first of all I don't think I would bother with the T25...I believe it referred to as the T2small. But if that's what you want/got already then go for it. And some one with in the past year mounted a turbo like that...pretty cool idea...different anyway.

For a manifold I would talk to either alain(whaterver the # is) or this guy

and your probably gonna have to fab up some kind of costume down pipe :thumbsup

hope this helps

Thanks alot for the help, We plan on getting everything setup and running good on a T25 mainly because they are very cheap and more forgiving on a motor, Once we get it all up, running and tuned we'll probably upgrade to a small 16g or better and sell the T25 for the same price we got it for.

So mounting the turbo with inlet and outlet on the opposite side shouldn't really change anything, we thought it probably shouldn't matter but we don't plan on guessing there.

Anyone know anyplace that has a downpipe that will fit the application or should we just get one custom bent and flanged?

Once again, i really appreciate the help

Feasible but not practical. Different flanges on those turbo's you listed. Unless you feel like making an adapter plate or buying a completely new manifold then I would recommend finding ONE that will work for you.

Best bet is to have a good shop (or yourselves if you're equiped) to fab one, IMO.

A DSM T25 and 16G have the same flanges. They are Mitsu housings. The Hahn turbos use Garrett exhaust housings for some reason. So If you have a manifold and downpipe made for a DSM T25, then any Mitsu turbo will bolt up(except for Hahn's). If you have a manifold made for a T25 from another car, it will likely use the Garrett turbine housing(ie, SR20DET). The T25 is a GREAT turbo for a stock engined 2GNT. You're not going to overwork it so on your car it won't be a "T-2small." Like you said, you can get them cheap, or free. You'll have to come up with a way to regulate boost as I think the stock wastegate spring on the DSM T25 is somewhere between 9-12psi.
