6968, head questions Posted by Erik, Jul-01-01 02:40 AM
OK here's my situation. I saw black smoke pouring out days ago. This was right after hooking up my wastegate CORRECTLY (thanks Darkone). So I did a compression test and got 200,200,190,205. My sparkplugs are oiled-fouled bad(3 of the 4). I know oil can get in to a plug 2 ways: 1.broken rings, 2. through the head. Anybody got any good ways of checking guides ON the car? I need suggestions before I try to break my wallet rebuilding an engine. Any ideas? Don't be afraid to post, I'm willing to consider any possible situation. Thanks

you can do a leak down test that will help pinpoint the leakage if there is any, which it sounds like there is
A leak down tester uses air from a compressor and measures the rate at which it leaks through the engine. This is done with the engine not running and the beauty of this is that toy can find the source of the leakage by listening for the escaped air.

Definately check your PCV valve. And make sure you're breather isn't plugged also. Bad rings would have shown in your compression test.. but the numbers look good. You say you saw black smoke? Well, if you were burning oil.. it would be white smoke. Black smoke (I think) is a sign of running hella rich. And your plugs could be carbon fouled and not oil fouled. How is your idle?

Well I was stupid and forgot to put back the PCV valve in when I replaced all my hoses with silicon ones. I ahve to order one for tomorrow. BTW it's oil fouled for sure. I know carbon doesn't drip :-)
