I posted a forum below and got some different feedback from a blown turbo situation! Someone said that since I was only boosing 2-3psi with the star stage 2 kit I was leaking boost (which i was for about a week until i fixed it) and he said that leaking boost could have caused my turbo to over rev alot and could have blown it from over reving so much? Is this possible? My other concern was the oil from the feed line from the oil pressure switch to the turbo ... was it getting enough oil. Before I sent the turbo back to turbonetics, I placed the feed line into a jug and cranked the engine and got some oil into the jug. I dont know how much should have came out, but I got some. Also, my oil temp gauge was reading that it was really hot .. could hot oil cause the turbo to blow like this? There was some shaft play in it and it was only a week old! The fins were somewhat bent up too. Anything suggestions/comments will help me out to try to save the new one from blowing as well! PLEASE HELP ME! I am a newbe! P.S. would it be a good idea to get a new oil press switch for the feed line from the dealer or should I be ok as long as some oil is coming out of it into the jug. I am also going to buy a B&M oil cooler kit too to help out with the oil temps. Does anyone else have an oil temp gauge? What is your temps? your gonna get the " you dont know enough to be turbo yet " .. heck even you admitted you where a newbie ..

i know turbo's blow mainly from not getting enough oil or not what not and that was the first time i ever heard of a turbo blowing because if it being over rev'd. just wanted to know if that possible, because they spin up to like 100,000 rpms!

i haven't heard of a turbo over revving.. but it seems possible.

It is very possible, but you usually see it on smaller turbos such as the T25 or even the 16g. Garrett CHRAs tend to be pretty tough, and the wheels don't spin as high an RPM to create boost due to their size.

COuld just be a case of infant mortality. Was it a new turbo?

If you bought it used, just write it off as you getting ripped off.

It was a brand new turbonetics t3/t4 that came with the star turbo kit? so you think this is possible for that to blow because of the leak eh??

how much oil should come from the line when you just crank the motor for 10seconds? not too much or a ton? i did it again and some came out, not a ton but enough to fill the bottom of a windshield wiper fluid jug or 3/4 of the bottom of it. or should i just 'think' it blew because of the massive boost leak?

the turbo was brand new with the kit ... everything new ... i never knew a turbo could blow from a boost leak ... trying so hard to spool but it cant because of the leak. maybe that is why sometimes it would spool up and sometimes it wouldnt. i didnt know though for sure that the boost leak would cause the shaft play and the fins to bend ... i guess the noise i was hearing was the leak and the fins scraping the walls of the turbo. think that was possible?

If the fins are bent, it either hit the wall hard enough, or touched it long enough for that to occur. otherwise, something may have goten into it and torn it up. Normally, spinning too fast for too long simply wears the shaft bearings out and it starts to leak oil, with large amounts of shaft play.

Can shaft play destroy fins? yes. I'd have to see the condition of the wheel before i'd make that determination myself though.

dino...ive seen the pics, yea the fins are bent on the compressor and turbine with some serious damage to the housings as well....deffinatly shaft play and a lot of it...and from the looks of it, he has had it for a while.

i had it for only ONE WEEK on the car when driving. i installed it over winter so it sat on the car all over winter but it was NEVER driven ... brought it out one week when it was nice out and thats when this hapened ... thats why i said i had a boost leak for about week and then i found the leak, sealed it, and bam, still did it ... dont know whats up. anyone help out there ?

clutch was slippin????... u didnt break it in the 1-2k miles ur suppose too? who knows ... shizknick happens....

what does a clutch slipping have to do with over-revving a turbo?

hmm im not taking his advice ... haha clutch slipping ? whats that have to do with anything?! anyway, i didnt know either i was supposed to 'break' in the turbo for 1-2k miles ... i just hopped in and starting trying to boost up ... should i be taking it easy on it for like 1k miles when i get the new one?
