69017, 8inj Setup: Megasquirt or EIC034 Posted by Dave41079, Apr-14-04 08:14 AM
Ok, I am looking for information ONLY from people using one or the other. What are the pros and cons of each unit, and what are some of the interesting features of both. I've read up on them both a little on here and other sites, but would like feedback from actual users. I will be doing my 8inj setup in about a month or so and need to decide on one or the other. If you have another setup than these two you like better, let me know about it.

I just started using the 034, and I love it. I can't compare it to others means, such as a DFI, Megasquirt, ect, but as far as using a rising rate FPR, and then using the 034, its a night and day difference. Having complete control, and tunability of your booted fuel map, is just awsome.
Pro's:
Fairly simple to tune Complete control of boosted fuel maps Can be relitivly low cost, if you do all the fabractaion You can use really large injectors as the secondaries No more INSANE fuel pressures!!! No whiny loud ass inline fuel pump needed..just a higher flow intank
Cons:
If you would somhow loose an injector/malfunction, it may be difficult to notice right away.. Quite a bit of custom fab work to set it up You need a laptop to program 'on the fly' Internal Map sensor/software is good for 24 psi-you can go higher, but you would have to set it too be very rich at 24 psi on the software, to run higher boost. You can have the 3 bar map sensor installed, for an extra cost though.
Thats about all I can think of at the moment...The megasquirt looks very nice too, but you have to put it all together, and tune fuel for all of the motor conditions..just more time consuming tuning, unitl several others may have base maps you can get from them..

What's the website to the 8 injector setup?

www.034efi.com is the website of the Computer itself. Its called the Supplementary ECU.

Ahh. I want to go this way but it seems like it's too much money.I'll probably not do this now, but sooner or later i am. I still need a laptop and also a datalogger to tune this thing. Well I'll be getting a laptop for college so I'll use that. I'll probably make this my winter project.

Don't know anything about megasquirt, but 034 rocks.

i agree, i can't say much about the Megasquirt, but i'm skeptical about it 'cause you have to have good soldering experience to build it, and also the circuit board of the megasquirt is kinda out dated to me. there's many of us that have the 034EIC and all have nothing but good things to say about it. there's also another possible groupbuy i can do, if many are interested.

I don't know about a groupbuy, but I'll be buying one probably within a month. I have a spare fuel rail and a laptop already, and the cost of all the parts to make it -6an the entire way ended up being $700 not counting another lower manifold or injector bosses, plus any fabbing I'd be doing. That's not much more than an SAFC and SFMU would be, and much more tunable.

Matt how much did you spend in all including fabing?

with the megasquirt you dont need the 8 injectors, you can just use larger injectors and compensate with the megasquirt.

True, but the cost of four cheap, smaller injectors as opposed to four big ones isn't even close, especially when you use your 4 stockers as primaries.
It took me awhile to get over the weirdness of using 8 injectors as opposed to 4.

Depends on your current setup really. I was using an SFMU with 30 lb injects, and I had my stock injects to use as primaries, and the 30 lb went in as the secondaries. I sold the SFMU to cover the cost of the new Aeromotive FPR also, so no cost there. I had to buy the 034 unit, aluminum fuel bar stock(only needed if you put the rail where I did, you can use a second stock rail if you put it on the lower mani), some fuel fittings, injector bosses...I spent around 400 probably. If you are starting from scratch, if you need to buy the FPR, injectors, stock rail, you'd prob be around 600-700. Don't forget you need a laptop and a pocketlogger too, but I has those already.

Here's what I spent. I got a deal on (4) 440ccs at about $100. But you don't need any larger than 300's or so and those should be no more than a $100. The EIC for $230. Extra rail are easily attainable for about $20 and the bungs for another $40 (unless you can fab some up). The FPR is $140 from Summitracing.
I think all in all, that's a great deal. All you'll need is someone to weld the bungs on the manny or epoxy them on yourself for free.

For you guys that are interested in the 034 setup, here is a list of almost every part/supply you will need in order to get it running, and tuning with it.
034 Supplementary Controller Stock or Custom fuel rail 4 injectors of your size choice Misc fuel line fittings, and fuel line 4 aluminum injector bosses Fuel injector wire harnesses A 1:1 Fuel pressure regulator An inline, or intank high volume fuel pump(255 LPH is fine) Vac line and T's, and connectors A 5.6-5.7K ohm resistor for the tach signal connection Some JB Weld for the injector bosses Solder/iron Laptop to program the 034 A pocketlogger for tuning
Of course you will need some tools, like drill bits, and something to fab up some mounting brackets or the like, for the second fuel rail.

I'd say Megasquirt for sure...
I have it running with 4 injectors and I love it!
You could run it like an EIC, or run only the Megasquirt for fuel with as many injectors as you like... 4-16... haha.
And if your worried about the soldering... I'll build it for you for a small fee if you like.
Do it... you know it makes sense.

It has all of the features of a DFI, but a better interface. It is easy to tune, not all that tough to build, and it thinks faster then the DFI. I trust the Chrysler and Mitsubishi engineers who designed the original location for injectors. They knew all of the airflow tricks that they were playing with the manifold and head, and decided on the best place for fuel atomization. Let's face it, non-atomized fuel costs in the gas milage department, so it is a concern for the Moparbishi engineers. Especially in a 420a. I picked up 4 42# injectors off of e-bay for 140 bux, shipping included. Megasquirt seems to be the setup that is the least hacked, in my opinion, and therefore what I am going for.

Ok Bill I agree, but they were also doing it with the stock injectors at fuel pressures they were well aware of.

slightly off topic... has anyone tried putting larger than stock injectors in the primary rail and placing even larger than those in the secondary rail? will i be the first...?

Wasnt someone running 310's? and then bigger ones ?

It seems to defeat the purpose of the 8 injector system. For me, the goal was to make the primaries supply exactly as much fuel as was necessary for N/A operation. That means using stock injectors at slightly lower than stock fuel pressures. When I was using 24lb primaries, I lowered the fuel pressure to mimic stock injectors. If you put 310+ cc injectors in the primary position, you would have to lower the fuel pressure way down to match the fuel needs of the engine. Then your primaries are flowing less fuel (similar to a stock injector flow rate) and your secondaries are flowing less fuel too (because you lowered the fuel pressure). With stock primaries and big secondaries, you should have more than enough fuel, so why bother?
And on choosing the 034 or MS, I think that depends on your abilities. The 034 is pretty basic and gets the job done. The MS goes beyond, but is more involved (building the unit, wiring sensors, and tweeking more variables). I might build a MS for myself now...but that would have been a stretch two years ago.

My setup is HKS AIC. The unit comes with map sensor and resistor pack for low impedance injectors. Got it on e-bay for 125.00. The new unit is on the 900.00 (AIC-3).
Pros: Good name brand - HKS Tune it while driving it, no lap top needed or other system. Adjust fuel delivery by rpm increments, boost pressure or both. Real simple to understand manual CHEAP in prize!
Cons: Up to 23psi(I'm not going up there, just 10-12 psi; if you are, don't get it) Other than that, nothing.

Stock Rebuild Block, Custom Turbo Kit: Custom 3" Downpipe and exhaust, TEO4H Turbocharger : 10-12 psi, Starion Intercooler, Custom IC Piping, HKS By-pass, HKS AIC, (4) 330 cc extra injectors, Autometer Gauges
