I fail to see where adding water coolant through the heart of a 1500+ degree turbo is totally without point. And I can't believe HRC would say that. Perhaps for only 5 or 6 psi, there is "no point", but I would believe that adding water cooling might really help things in terms of the longevity of the turbo and lessen the the amount of time needed to "turbo time."

is the oil from your motor that it's normally cooled by run all that much warmer then the water temp?

I plan on doing this as well. Probably at the same time as I pull the head. I think it's a great idea, and will probably help keep my oil from breaking down so quickly.

I have mine water cooled..how can it hurt? You just tap into the heater line that comes back from the fire wall along the drivers side of the engine and then goes down to a lower radiator line....there's a nice rubber splice right there for you and everything. One of the easiest things you can do to help keep your turbo happy IMO.

actually it will. The oil isn't cooled by outside means and doesn't have the cooling capacity that water does, otherwise our engines would be cooled by oil instead of antifreeze and water ;) but that's nothing you didn't know

but it's also about thermal capacity, there will be more heat dissipated which means more heat taken away, which should also help underhood temps, spool up and (most importantly) power .

water cooled turbos are an excellent idea - oiling the turbo has 2 purposes though of course lubrication and cooling (why do I get bad thoughts of women when I think of Lube)

my vehicle has an engine oil cooler ;) hehe..

although I do not know if the turbo (pictured below) is cooled by water or oil..

interesting tid bit for you all... you guys talk about not getting the EGT's over 1600degrees... well on a motor like mine.. ya don't want the EGT's to ever go above 1350degrees.. hehe..

Thura, you would tap into the short rubber line down in front of the trans. It connects to the main water pump line and feeds the heater core I believe. The flow of water through the turbo does not matter, it can go both ways. Get two NPT fittings with hose barbs and some coolant line. Remove that small hose and redirect the coolant through the line. Your HVAC is now a turbo cooler. :7

That's how I did it... Tapped in right there.

Anyone who is thinking about this mod should do it right away!
It's a very worthwhile mod... and I've had ZERO overheating issues with it... drov eit that way all last summer.

If your worried simply mod your fans so that the AC fan comes on with the regular radiator fan... makes a big difference... ;)

My coolant sits at 186f most the time... even with an 180f thermostat. ;)

Justone, what type of fittings did you use on the pipes to be able to have an male fittings to put the hoses on?

Off the pipes you need -10 nuts and sleeves then a -6 male to -10 male reducer (or what ever size you want to reduce to). The hose ends are -6 and the ends into the cartridge are 1/4 npt to -6 male. The stuff on top going into the thermostat housing is all -10.

You also need a flare tool to make the steel pipes work w/ the nuts and sleeves.

all in all a very easy mod but not cheap to do the way I did it.
