68073, KABOOM!!! Posted by cseithel, Mar-31-04 01:43 PM
well, it finally happened. i was driving home from my friends house last night and i got on it and BOOOOOMMM!!! MY ENGINE BIT THE DUST LAST NIGHT. Just like someone posted a few days ago that they had oil spewing from their breather filter on their valve cover, now i have it. Oil is everywhere. Engine is kaput. Compression is 180-180-60-60. Now, i don't know if this is a dumb question or not but, CAN I STILL DRIVE ON THIS ENGINE? I need to get to work and shit, but if i baby it, not boost, and drive like a bitch, will it hurt anything? I made it home from autozone today, it runs, just sounds funny, and smokes because of the blowby. Any help or input is appreciated.

Owie. Sounds like time to start saving for a rebuild. :(

uh, with that low of compression, especially on half your cyl i say dont screw it up any more than it already is. mya guy at my school did this same thing in a sorts with his eclipse...cept with the tranny. he noticed a problem that needed to be fixed...but instead he kept driving it and one day completely shattered the housing and chewed up his tranny horribly. needless to say he coulda just fixed it, but he's been carless now for almost a year looking for a complete tranny. point-dont mess it up, fix it and go on

Any clue as to the cause? How was the fuel, egt, etc... Details?
What was your injector size and boost level?
Cartech or sfmu, or fmu.

i am running 10 psi on 36 lb injectors, my egt's were fine and the a/f was good too, i think i was even rich just to be safe. I think it was just it's time to go. I have been boosting for about 25-30,000 miles now on stock everything, except for exhaust and normal shit like that. it was pretty much inevitable. i have never hit above 10 psi, maybe a couple of spikes here and there, but i can't attribute the blow to anything. Thanks for the help guys, please keep it comin' if possible. I'd like to have more opinions if possible. I need to know if it still safe to drive on with that low of compression. It seems to run okay, nothing erratic or anything. EDIT: I AM RUNNING THE VORTECH FMU AND S-AFC

who has done the howell rebuild kit? it is between that and the VT rebuild, i just don't want to have to send my engine off. Which would be a better choice. The howell kit is cheaper at $1100, and the VT rebuild is like $1745 and i have to ship my engine out. Is the howell kit pretty self explanatory and easy to install?

another option is to get a fully assembled shortblock. FTY (gets their stuff from VT AFAIK) and Howell are the best vendors for this. i have the Howell 2.0 shortblock. they did a good job assembling it, minus the shorter neon dipstick. a compression check last week (about 20,000 miles) yeilded 180-185-182-180. Howell claims 4-6 weeks per shortblock, but it will be more along the lines of 8 weeks by the time you get it.

i think that is the route that i am going to take. i think that i am just going to do the rebuild myself though and just order the 2.0 howell kit to my house. it should take that long then right? did you send your shortblock away to get done? if so, how much did that cost altogether? thanks for all the help guys...

The howell 1100 kit is just the rods, pistons, bearings, and stuff like that MINUS the actual engine. The 1700 vt is forged internals and the engine itself.

i was under the impression that you had to send your shortblock to VT and they built it for you. I don't think that they give you a block, do they? Either that, or you trade your core block and they give you another one. Either way, i think Howell is the best way because i can rebuild myself, i don't need the block, just forged internals. then my engine will be bulletproof, well, after the clutch and possibly phantom grip install too.

Its 1745 from them, not including shipping. Make me a offer if you want it. I want as close as possible to that price since it is brand new and never installed. I also have ARP headstuds, Upper gasket set including head gasket and VC gaskets, Oil pan gasket,Timing belt, TB pulley, TB tensionioner bracket, pulley, and bolts, Tensioner Water Pump and gasket, and Manual Trans Fluid (2 bottles).

let me think about it man. I don't know if i could come up with that money even though that is exactly what i fuckin' need! DAMNIT! I will probably just have to go with the howell kit and do it myself. plus shipping would be a bitch on that block, especially assembled like that already. I think that is hitting "freight" territory.

by the way, what are my comp. numbers going to be after the rebuild with 8.6 JE pistons? like 140-160 range? Or am i way off?

Comparing the 2g 4g63 compression ratio of 8.5 with 8.6 I'm guessing you should be at 170-180.

I wouldn't recomend it. Your ring lands are probly broken. If one of the pieces gets by the rings....well you do the math there..
