67918, smoke.. this isn't looking good. Posted by solareclipse98, Mar-29-04 06:27 PM
Alright ... We got the axles back in and everything put together... the fuel curve seems to be right and it idles great now.. but we have a big or small issue...
When @ idle there is white/gray smoke coming out the back it burns the eyes a little bit but not quite as much as i was when i first rebuilt the engine and was running way pig rich.... I know im not running rich because we are monitoring the fuel pressure... I'm worried this may be oil im burning.. I have changed the oil twice in the past week no metal shavings or antifreeze in the oil.....
The knocking is still there a little and from research i have done on here it sounds like piston slap once the engine warms up it goes away... the smoke however doesn't...
When i take off the oil cap on the valve cover it blows out white/gray smoke the same that is coming out the exhaust....
Are my rings bad?
suggestions thoughts?

Not sure if this is much help or not, but mine does that regularly in the morning when there is alot of fog/humidity. I thought the worst also, but when the temp rises(atmospheric) then it goes away.

yeah, same here, but based on his second comment... regarding smoke from his valvetrain... its something more serious

Think so? I have one of the RRE catchcan's and I get smoke out of it when I run it hard... Not out the dipstick though, just the valvecover... and my comp #'s are 205-205-205-205 :shrug

It continues even after the engine has warmed up.... when i rev it it doesn't seem to get worse but its always there... I may do a compression test tomorrow to see if i've got some issues there... if i do this thing is going back to the shop to be re-ringed... I have had nothign but problems with this engine... I may just drop the turbo and go all motor... I dono...I love the sound of a turbo Im just frustrated i guess.

Yea a compression test will tell more at this point. I rember when my engine blew, when I reved it up more "smoke" came from my catch can. I hope its not a blown land/rings. Best of luck man.

I say get a new machine shop. You are having way to many problems with that thing.
best time so far 14.3 @ 101.1mph(no traction) fastest 2GNT with a hitch! until proven wrong...
