67649, fmu and safc or sfmu Posted by swhit321, Mar-25-04 05:18 PM
I'm trying to think ahead for if I decide to go after the custom turbo kit. so far as I undrestand it the sfmu is the same as the fmu except that the fuel pressure rate can change at different throttle levels? Is this correct? Because I would think that the fmu and a safc could be used to accomplish this also. Let me know if I'm way off or what.

The benifit of the SFMU over the FMU, is you can easily change the rate at which fuel pressure rises based on boost, mechanically, via different discs and springs.
From what I understand, the FMU can also be modified to do the same thing, via a calibration kit you have to order from Vortech.
I don't know what the difference in price is, but I would go with an SFMU just to save the trouble. (which I have)
Also maybe look into the Chill Factory unit, which seems to be able to handle the same funtions. (and is cheaper, and smaller in size)
The SAFC does nothing with fuel pressures, just affects the map sensor readings, which in turn effects injector pulse (ultimately controlled by the ECU)
Throttle position has nothing to do with Fuel pressure, only vac/boost levels. Throttle would only affect the SAFC.

so is the fmu a static fuel pressure unit? it only increases when dialed in, not according to boost. I meant to say that the sfmu rises along with boost before but I'm sleepy...

No, the fmu rises with boost as well, but it comes at a set rate... 12:1 I THINK. I'm not for sure on that so don't quote me. I think it can be re-calibrated to 8:1. Once again, that's just a guess.
The point is the SFMU comes with everything you need to change that rate-of - gain. Also, with the SFMU, you can sort of "fine tune" your fuel curve, and set a limit to how high your fuel pressure can go.

you are both wrong!
Fmu is one set rate...can be in 4:1, 6:1, 8:1, 10:1, or 12:1 depnds on which one you have.
The SFMU will adjust the static pressure, ajustable rate via disks, adjustable ceiling (max fuel press) and the vac point that the fuel pressure will begin to raise.

How was I wrong?
Just couldn't remember the rates of the FMU, seeing as I don't have one.

well that was my point was that it comes in various sizes....read like you were saying it comes in 12:1 only.

ok so the fmu raises acording to boost cepending on which you get, while the sfmu can be adjusted so if you decide to increase boost you can tune for that specifically. Now would the fmu have an adverse effect on my idle?

an SFMU would be more for if you plan on going to bigger injectors in the near future. If you buy the correct settings for your FMU now, and plan on keeping those, then you would be fine.

I think that I jsut found a fmu that has an adjustment kit along with it. I could more than likely get it for less than $100 does this seem like a good deal? It appears that way to me
