67084, Backfire Sound? At like 8/9 psi
Posted by TapRooT, Mar-15-04 12:38 PM
Ok here it is. When I'm running like 4/5 psi my car seems to run perfect and the a/f gauge looks fine even tho its a blinky light one =). But it seems when i crank it up to like 6/7 every once in awile ill get like these small hestitations like small backfires. I have no clue what is is? Then at like 8/9 psi it gets alot of those small hestitations? And the a/f gauge seems to run lean. It doesnt sound like detonation but i have no clue can anyone help me? I'm waiting on afc so i can tune it right to see if that is the problem but any insight is helpful thanks

do you even know what your fuel pressure is at any boost? sounds like a fuel problem.. btw.. a/f gauges don't mean shit.

thats the wing crinkling and uncrinkling the metal of your hatch when you accelerate/decelerate rapidly

(sorry)

Try adding a resonator, it got rid of the backfiring for me.

(er.. listen to someone else my method = bandaging a possible serious wound .. heh)

Yah that was kinda mean sir. But its ok flaming on tappy isnt nice but i dont care. I could say the same thing about your ricey graphics or your whale tale also so stfu. =).

See i think its a fuel pressure problem i have no fuel pressure gauge but i dont think im getting enough fuel that is what my first instinct is. And i keep having boost spikes Turboxs standard GO TO HELL!!! NOW!! lol But i think it is fuel im gonna get my afc in soon and try to mess with it if that doesnt work i guess ill get bigger injectors. Hope it fixes it. I went out and played with it a second ago its like spiking really bad but itll hold 5 for a sec then spike to 9 and then its like pop pop pop pop weird sounding noises with really really bad hestitation feels like your not even moving almost. Don't know if that really helps. But im going to try to go get some race gas or something tommorow see if it richens the fuel out and helps it any?

Why would you even think of boosting your car without a fuel pressure gauge? THE MOST important part of the entire turbo system-fuel? Get a fuel pressure gauge asap dude! The blinky light A/F gague tells you shit. I hope you at least have an EGT gauge? Whats it reading? What do you use for fuel cut defensor on the Map sensor?

Check your plug gap...I was having hesitation like a stutter at higher psi. I tried .035 and had to step it down to .032 which worked fine.

its all fuel guys. i bet he is running very lean or massively rich. i doubt rich though..

Semper boost here is a story about the plug gap.
I bought new plugs they were Bosch platinums and gapped to .29 and i put them in. Everytime i would hit boost it would do the sound im experiencing now i mean weither it be 1psi or 9psi it would do that sound. So i got the NGK Plantinum's now it does it at like high boost? I have no clue if its the plugs though. Because mine are already gapped down to .29 so should i go down even further?

Id had a similar problem...not quite as bad as you're having...and I replaced my spark plugs. Solved my problems.

I had the EXACT same problem. $30 later and some new Accel wires...gone.

Someone else in engine/performance is posting about the same problem.

You still have not mentioned what type of FCD you are using on the map sensor???

Only thing i have is what came with the star kit for fuel just the fuel pump and the vortech fpr. I also have the missing link

Platintum Plugs are too hot for a turbo'd car. I'd stick with a colder plug. I run stock NGKs cuz I can't find a colder one and I run fine at 7 psi

Well i think i might have found out the problem... I took all my spark plugs out a bit ago found they had large carbon deposits on them not getting good spark. I think this is because i had no o2 sensor for awile and was running extremely rich maybe causing plugs to go bad. But i cleaned off the spark plugs and it got ALOT better but still with a few hestitations/popping noise. So i just went and ordered some NGK BKR7E's and i think itll fix the problem and i still need some better plugs wires probably order some accel's tonight.

if you were running with no o2 sensor.. the ecu will think that you are in a very rich condition (which you will be) but then the car will lean itself out.

I had some stuttering problems at 6 psi when I first turbo'd the car. I experimented with the SFMU, and found I was too rich. It felt like ignition cut. It would work fine all the way to 6 psi, and once it hit 6, the car would fall flat on it's face. Like a constant surging feeling or something. Kinda hard to explain. Leaned it out a bit and it seemed to take car of the problem, but now the EGT's get a little warm. On a long pull, I can hit 1600, so I typically let off when it hits 1600. Not sure exactly what the issue is.
