66954, How much boost SHOULD I be running?
Posted by GhEttOrAiD, Mar-12-04 04:42 PM
Ok this is like.. the eighth "emberassing" / retard post I've had to make... but I'm only doing it for the sake of my motor, so just spare me any trash talk :D

I've got 8.5:1 .020 over Wiseco Pistons, Eagle rods, Vortech FMU with an unknown ratio (I have 4:1 sitting in a box ready to be put in whenever i have money).. New stock fuel pump and filter, stock? injectors (I assume...)... T3/T4 of some kind... HKS Super AFR+EVC4, Star FMIC, thats all I can think of that should be pertinent...

I WAS running 8psi/10psi... however I don't know if this was safe... So I recently stepped it back to 5psi because... I'm paranoid and wanted to make this thread... LOL

Always use at least 91oct... right now i have 5 gallons of 100 in there... bringing me to 93.5.. :\

Anyway... thanks in advance... and again yes I am retarded/severely misinformed.

How much do you want to be running? :rolleyes

There's no real amount you should be running... just run as high as you safelly can... unless your retarded like me and like to push the envelope.... :cheers

You shouldn't really run any higher until you have more knowledge of your setup... like what injector size and FMU ratio for a start...
Get a fuel pressure guage and egt guage also... and AFR obviously.

Unknowns can ruin your day in no time...

well it looks like the weakest link in the setup is the stock fuel pump. I think you could do 7-8 psi no prob. hell i spray a 75 shot on stock just about everything.

Well, judging from your engine, you are capable of big numbers really (I wish I had your motor). BUTT, and this is one big ass, if I were you I'd get everything set up to ensure my engine last (yes, even forge internals can detonate, ask dave_fl!!!).

Get your fuel squared away and confirmed. I have no friggin clue what goes into the fmu and the ratio but figure out your injector size first. The stock injectors are being put to its limit at 8 psi (your getting about 110 psi of fuel –NOT GOOD – pressure at that boost level; that is twice as much flow the stock injectors usually are built to run).

Get gauges galore... egt, apexi tt (with the af function), fuel pressure gauge.
Stock fuel pump is not enough fuel if your not running an inline fuel pump as well (like the hahn kits) so get the walbro hi flow fuel pump.

Not knowing what your running is not good, so figure that out before you go insane with boost. Upgrade to bigger injectors if I was you... but make sure to get the hiflow fuel pump (only 100) before the injectors, then the gauges.

Yeah I've got Venom 550's sitting in the same box as the recalibration kit...

Is it mandatory that I have an _S_fmu? I just have the universal fmu...

Definitely agree on the gauges though... hmm

Oh I do have the apexi TT just don't know how to program it to give me numbers... just shows --:-- when I go to O2... when its set to AF/o2 though it gives me a readout... I just dont know wtf it means!!

My shop tells me that walbro, while cheap, is trash. Say that I should get a Supra TT pump for its reliability/quietness

For the a/f readings, do an advanced search since you are built, because you can afford to be "less rich" in fuel then us stock bottom end guys. We (who have a stock bottom end) tend to stay in the .96 range. I don't really know exactly how lean in a/f you can be if your built, but .96 is good for now. As for the 02, when it shows the --:--, has your car been running for at least the 5 min? The 02 sensor needs to be warmed up to start reading the 02 signals...

As for the sfmu, it's not mandatory. You can definetly run the fmu, but I just don't know much about the fmu, and all the ratios and crap for it so can't help you there.

For the fuel pump, the point is, JUST GET A HI FLOW FUEL PUMP. Stock fuel pumps can't flow enough with boost. Why do you think the star kits come with an aftermarket hi flow pump, or the hahn has the accel in line fuel pump, in order to "help" the stock fuel pump flow enough fuel.

I don't know what I had when I purchased the car, I just know it was noisy as hell. my former shop just said it "sounded bad" so I told them to replace it.. .No clue what it actually was...

The manual for the TT says I have to tune it whilst on a dyno... it seems to show the --:-- no matter when I try... apexi site is down so i can't be more specific

Long time ago I asked what I needed to boost a lot more, one of the things I was told = 4:1 recalibration kit.. so I've got that.. heh.

Is there any difference which EGT I go for? I would almost rather it be digital so that I can tell exactly where I am, a lot faster than with an analog one...

Even if the car's warmed up, it still blank? :shrug I have no clue... Email apexi or something...

For egt's doesn't matter really if you get an analog or digital. Just a preference.
