66923, turbo efficiency? Posted by DR1665, Mar-12-04 09:42 AM
Mr All-Motor has a turbo question for once. I was reading in the thread here about people over 18psi and I saw www.hahnracecraft.com/hahn/parts/turbo%20efficiency.htm linked from HRC. I noticed the S20G is more efficient over more output levels than the other 16g twins. It looks like it operates in the 70-80% efficiency range. This got me wondering, is there any turbo that operates at a higher efficiency rating? Is it possible to attain 99, 100%? What are the benefits to this level of efficiency? Cooler intake charge and thus more power? Thanks!

I don't think there is such a thing as a 99-100% efficient turbo cause physics prevents that from happening. I mean, the little friction whether it's from the oil, the heat, etc, keep this from happening imo. Don't know much about turbos but judging from my physics class, 99-100% is pretty much impossible. Maybe a turbo in the 80-90% efficiency may be more possible – 100, No.

inlet air and exhaust charge velocity within the housing can be controlled to a maximum with different angles of clip on the blades or ball bearings.. but as mentioned, it is impossible to obtain anything over a 95% efficincy rate when you have an obstruction directly inline of the exhaust path... as for the most efficient set-up?.. I don't think it can be narrowed down to one turbo.
