66321, Identifying Garrett turbo's from just looking at them.. Posted by Breezio, Mar-03-04 02:59 AM
anyone know how? or can tell me what to look for. I'm still trying to figure out what the stock turbo on my new rig is.. I know it's a Garrett...

if you could post a picture it would help :)
ok pointers most T4 have an almost square flange 3.75x4.25 most t3 have a rectangular flange check for a/r marking on the housing too most garrett have them stamped

well i can tell you it's probably a bit larger then a T3 or T4...
but i know the compressor housing says 'A/R 1.10'
let me see if i can dig up a picture of another one.. as i haven't received the new rig yet.

sounds like a garret t-100 local shop runs 2 of them ona 520cu ford block to make a 275mph pass a bonneville.

jeez! 1.10 A/R what do you have in your 420A a 3.0? that thing is huge!

hehe.. I've found upgrade kits to put 'A/R 1.00' compressor housing on there with a better compressor wheel..
and well.. i don't drive a 420a.. not unless you are talking 420ci. I should be picking up my 7.3L powerstroke turbo diesel this weekend. vvv read the sig ;)
I know there is a direct bolt on upgrade to the Garrett GTP-38, but I still don't know what the stock turbo is. any ideas?

what does a/r stand for?

area/radius
the scroll is measured by the cross-sectional area of the scroll's tube (A) and the distance from the center of the tube to the turbine shaft (R) the numbers dont mean anything to the user and for the most part, unless of course along with other information such as t04 52 trim .70 A/R 'R' does not change much for different housings, but by dividing R into A, you get the A/R ratio. the A/R ratio of the exhaust housing refers to the size and shape of the scroll that is cast into the housing. It basically determines how restrictive the housing will be, versus how quickly the turbine will spool up. a lower A/R ratio (smaller A) results in a more restrictive housing. this restriction speeds up the exhaust gasses and increases the amount that the gasses will expand. the speed and expansion of exhasut gas is what causes the turbine to spin (spool) with a low A/R ratio, the turbine will spin up quicker, but as engine output and rpms increase, the restriction of the housing begins to build up too much back pressure on the engine (reduces performance) too much back pressure is when the pressure in the exhaust manifold is more than half of the pressure in the cylinder, a larger A/R ratio will improve your engine's top end, but you will lose some mid range power and increase lag, smaller A/R ratio will help the bottom and mid range, but may affect the top end. (good example of this is a t25 vs say a t28, typical 4g63 doad turbos)
heres to give you an idea of what it applies to:

neat info on the A/R.. i was wondering that myself.. so by upgrading the compressor housing from a 1.10 to a 1.00 it will take a bit longer to spool up but have better top end? or is that only on the turbine side..?

Yeah Josh. Good info. I'd always wondered that, but never really cared enough to look into it. Is this to say that there is an A/R for both the compressor and the turbine? Or is this an overall measurement for the entire turbo? Regardless, lower number would be a lower A/R, or do I have that switched? It sounds like (just to make sure I've got it here), if you have a lower A/R, you get quicker spool, right?

ok.. I found a picture off of EBAY.

and I know the compressor wheel is 80mm..
any ideas?

looks to me like a powerstroke turbo from the ford turbo kits for the excursion, f-2/350 its a garrett gtp38R, ball bearing, 1.0 a/r, capable of about 40psi boost, better flowing over the stock 80mm, this one is 88mm

I already know about the gtp-38 upgrade turbo. the one i posted was of the stock turbo.. which I'm still trying to figure out exactly which garrett turbo it is (just for fun).. that's why i posted the picture..
