My "sort of friend" who owns a shop in south SF was telling me that turbochargers do in fact need some backpressure to spool up, something about requiring heat to make power... Honestly I couldnt make much sense of it... But basically the overall message being that running a qtec exhaust cutout as I plan to do will hurt me massively on the low end/lower rpm's BECAUSE the turbo needs some backpressure in order to spool. Conversely, he said that upgrading to a 3" downpipe would be very beneficial... =0

FYI, I'm capping things off with a GSX muffler this afternoon. Need the car to look as stock as possible...and sound a bit tamer. Long term plans were to add an electric cutout so that at least some of the time I can have loud obnoxious exhaust... But... if my turbocharger takes forever to spool with the exhaust opened up, what good does it do other than ... be obnoxious and loud?

<edit> If the GSX muffler sounds okay and doesn't restrict me TOO much more I probably wouldnt bother... still not happy about having to do this =-\

turbos spool up due to a pressure differential. Therefore, more backpressure = less pressure differential = slower spool.

YEAH thats what I was thinking

they have back pressure sensors you can use to test what certain sections of your exhaust are restricted.....


reducing back pressure directly increases exhaust flo, i.e- thats why a 3inch downpipe directly effects spool time.

Although you'll find if you *ahem* one day accidentally lose your exhaust system.... your fuel trims will go apeshit and the car won't run too well :+

That's because you need an O2 sensor... even if you dont want an exhaust... haha.
