Those of you that have stage 1 and 2 turbo kits without aftermarket internals, how long have you been running your car like that? Is it safe if I keep it at 8PSI when I get a turbo?
Thanks

about a year now. no problems here.

you better knock on wood, and get a spare block prepped :-)

i ran 8 psi for over a year and my compression was still 210 across the board when i ripped the engine out and replaced the bottom end. keep an eye on your gauges and don't beat on it and it should last you a while. but then again all engines are a bit different. Good luck.

there is no reason you cant have a stock block w/turbo just dont be a dumb ass and turn the boost up too high.

Stage one at 5 psi. Soon to be stage 2 at 5 psi :).

Ive got 22,000 Turbo Miles at 5psi - I was stage 1 for half of it, now stage 2. Dont drive ti into the ground and tune it well, and maintain it....and you'll be okay if you engine has good compression and relatively low mileage.

I went stage 2 in 99, put over 4o,ooo miles at 8-10 psi daily before going built in '03. Some may argue that those numbers are pushing it, but it is all in tuning. Just don't get crazy/greedy with boost. You will eventually want to build it. Hell, I' now on a second build going 2.2L.

I'm just gonna wait to save more and more money (around 5000-6000), then I'll buy a new engine (top and bottom) with hi-comp since I am at 83000 miles already. Might as well start with a whole new engine at 100,000. :)

a pretty good majority that push the stock internals find they fail. keep it really rich, run good gas and don't dog it and you can pretty much get away with it for a while. do a compression check, if your numbers are high then you know it may be safe to keep it at 6-7 psi but you'll get that speed bug and want to turn up the boost. have some dough set aside if you do. building a motor isnt all that much. if you have the money to get a turbo kit then you should be able to scrounge up the extra 1500 for the rebuild.

i was boosting 5psi for about 10K and then 10psi for about 20K, no problems :) she loved it, eventually i cracked a ring land though on the 4th piston, i also dessimated the headgasket to hell and beyond. with good compression and watching the a/f you'll be fine _________ 96 talon esi-t san clemente, ca

About 14 months and 13k miles on 7psi. Last compression test results... 195 straight across.

Sorry if this is a dumb question but how do you do a compression test? can somebody find me a link or explain it to me?
Thanks

Question is asked by everyone. Do a search to find more info. Everyone's car is different so there is no way of knowing how your car will react to 8psi or 6psi or whatever. When I met GreenHRC he was running 12psi on stock internals for a year or two and was fine. Corbin has been on stock internals running 6psi for about 4 years. I blew my motor after 3 months from a boost spike to 10 1/2psi on the dyno and my compression was fine right before the turbo install. The 2nd motor lastest almost 2 years until I sold the turbo kit, but I rarely went WOT. Just make sure your compression is good and there are no other problems w/ your car before you do the install. 6-8psi is normal w/ a FMIC and USUALLY safe in most cases. Good luck. -Dave
