65554, Anyone using Chill Factory regulator, need advise
Posted by QC DSM ESiT, Feb-19-04 07:04 PM
Okay I am going to get rid of the POS Cartech (a.k.a. Craptech) and I was thinking about the Chill Factory Regulator. What all should I get when buying it? Do I need the additional disks? Should I get the regulator with the tuning hardward or just the regulator? Also would this just be a direct replacement from the Craptech or would there need to be some additional installation of fuel lines? Also one more question is it good reliability wise? Thanks in advance for the help. I can't wait to get this thing!

get with babybeclipse and silvernt, they live by the guy and are his biggest fans. they would no better, i think babyb is running the regulator too.

You're upgrading sideways. Open up a Chill Factory reg, wham, Cartech.

Buy an SFMU and call it a day.

indeed

I don't think I've ever heard an S-FMU complaint.

Agreed. The CF regulator has definite issues with seeing vacuum when it is the only regulator in the system(why it comes with a check vavle). At best I'd only use it in conjunction with a real FPR to control the rise rate.

Ahh shit..........I haven't done my fuel system yet, and now I'm seeing this. So is this thing a piece of shit? What are all the problems. I've been away for awhile and I haven't seem any previous post hating on the CF fmu yet. I didn't see them in the seach either. Whats going on with this thing? :shrug

So what do you guys suggest then for a SFMU? What does SFMU mean anyway?

It stands for Super Fuel Management Unit. It is a product of Vortech. Try a search for that, lots of info hanging around.

I don't see what everyone is complaining about. It does say in the instructions you *may* have issues with low vac conditions (such as large cams)

If Len was able to extract 500hp to the wheels with ONLY the regulator (no piggy back or other electronics) I think that says allot about the regulator.

All the neon guys prefer CF products. I don't see why 2gnt's would have issues.

I have yet to fine tune my set up but so far I'm happy.

Um ... if anything it'd have more problems with high vac situations not low vac (ie ... closer to atmospheric). Also you've probably never had to take one apart yet either.

I've had nothing but problems with mine since I got it and I had to rebuild it (problems inconsistant idle fuel pressure though it's really static fuel pressure since it can't take vacuum and inconsistant rise rate). Right now it just sits on a shelf. Don't get me wrong I'm sure it does it's job but in my opinion a regulator that can't regulate fuel pressure from vacuum and that can have considerable amount of damage done FROM vacuum to require a rebuild has a little more left to be desired. I would've paid the extra money to get an S-FMU to avoid these issues and have some vacuum adjusted fuel pressure.

Anyways, I'm not out to bust on CF. I've called them several times with my problems and they have been helpful. I've seen the DP they made for you and it's beautiful. I've met Len and spent a decent amount of time with him to know he's a good guy. But while this is an upgrade from the Craptech, it's far from an S-FMU. Anyone who's looked at both units (that knows what their looking for) will be able to tell a difference immediately.

Some of the problems with the CF reg may be because it was designed with neons in mind...
The Neon does NOT reduce fuel pressure under vacum... the ECU takes care of adjusting the pulse width to compensate for vacum conditions... so they prolly didn't design the CF reg to see vacum... and thus the need for a check valve. :shrug

Are people having problems even with the check valve in place? Is the check valve failing to work? What exactly is happening here? Damn the stress!

Its not that the check valve is not working, its that the cf fpr needs the check valve is their point. It indicates a flaw in the design.

That's an interesting point (the above person) about the cf fpr design is for the neons. Do neon owners hate the craptech like we at 2gnt do? Maybe the craptech is designed for the neon in mind at the onset of hrc's development.
I don't know, just throwing some ideas :).

So as long as the check valve is in, I shouldn't have any problems? Sorry for bringing all this schoolgirl crying shit to everyone, but ya'll done made me paranoid about my shit.

I'm to the point where I just want someone to tell me.....Should I use this thing? :wary

I would like to add to my previous comment. Len is a great guy. The support you can get from Chill Factory is beyond wonderful. They will spend hours on the phone with you to willingly help you out even for question non-related to their products.

I upgraded to a CF reg from the Craptech. Honestly, the first one I got from CF, the diaphram was damaged, but was quickly replaced by Len, and he even paid for shipping both ways.

The new one works great, always consistent, and real smooth.

As for the check valve, I don't believe it's a flaw in the design. If it is included in the reg kit, then it is there for a reason. Rising rate regulators are not designed to see vacuum or they will not function properly, therefore, this is why if you want a to run without a check valve, you have to use the rising rate in conjuction with a 1:1 standalone reg. That way the fuel pressure stays the same even at idle under vacuum. The check valve disables the rising rate from seeing vacuum and therefore allows the ECU to control all fuel with the injectors prior to hitting boost. When boost kicks in, thats when your rising rate begins to do its job.

For all you guys that may have had a problem with the reg:
I am absolutely sure that if you gave Len a call and told him what was up, you could just send the reg back in and you would get a perfectly good replacement.

I don't understand all this CF bashing. It's like not wanting to try a new food b/c you think it will taste gross.

I am not all for CF either, I like many things about Hahn, Vortech, and many other companies. I think that CF has some good products to offer and if CF had some more supporters, I think they could come out with a BAD ASS turbo kit for our 2gnt's.

That's my thoughts about this. I hope more ppl are willing to give CF a shot. I think the CF rising rate is by far much better than the craptech. It's a great affordable solution and just as good as a S-FMU imo.

Thanks you.

I would have had the CF kit fabricated and marketed but I'm a little tight on money and can't afford it right. This bashing isn't helping spawn interest in a kit either.

If the 2gnt community really wanted another good choice for a turbo kit they shouldn't be so close minded. You people have to remember competition among companies means the consumers win.

Regardless, I'm going all Chill Factory. I have the privilege of having master fabricators 8mi from my garage. To top that they are great friends too.

Ok Im not quite sure about this debate. The CF regulator is 259.99 + $8 S&H

Addtional disks for Other rates of gain $35

The SFMU is 280.95 + S&H. Might as well spend the xtra 40$ and get the SFUM right?

Different SFMU disk come when you buy the unit right?

You know what's funny about this whole topic... everyome's logic is flawed...

You know why... simple, only the 95 cars have an FPR that responds to vacuum. Try looking for the vacum line connected to your 96-99 FPR... there isn't one!

The 2GNT's are just like the Neons... the stock PCM takes car of the fueling... it uses a static fuel pressure from the FPR... it does NOT vary under vaccum!

How do you think I run my 450 cc units with just the Craptech... simple... it's cating just like it was supposed to... static FPR until you hit boost...
66076, RE: Anyone using Chill Factory regulator, need advise
Posted by XtremeRS, Feb-27-04 12:24 PM
I don't get what some of you are saying..The CF wasn't designed to see vac?? WTF?? YOu do realize that the regulator uses the vac line as the boost signal line right? So if the regulator should not see any vac, you would HAVE to use a check valve, for it to operate properly. It has nothing to do with it working on a Neon motor. Its all vac/boost sources! Its not like if you hook it up to Neon motor, the CF reg majically wont see any vacuum. It sounds like they want it to work like the Vortech FMU, the one that uses the stock FPR for stock fuel pressure under non-boost conditions. Thats fine. But as mentioned above, the price for the CF, compared to the SFMU, which is MUCH more versitile, is around the same price? So if you can't really control non-boost fuel pressure with the CF, then how is that a better solution/cheaper solution to the SFMU, that CAN control every aspect of the fuel pressure curve? You do know that the SFMU can be adjusted to not vary the fuel pressure under vac condtitions right? I have nothing against the CF unit, but some of you are trying to justify that its a solution that is cheaper/and equal to the SFMU..its just not so..

^^^ Thank You!

You guys all misread this as a CF bashing. The original post was about whether or not to get CF FMU to replace his Craptech. No one posted anything that wasn't true (You yourself stated that and I stated that I thought that getting a S-FMU is better than getting a CF FMU. Simple as that.

On a side note ... who gives a rats ass whether or not the stock FP is static on 96+. You can't use that as an excuse for this. Fucking car wasn't even meant to see boost either so you can't use "it was this way stock" excuse. So you stick a vacuum line on it and it adjust pressure to vacuum and god forbid you get less FP under VACUUM ... IF it's a little lean under cruise and little to no load thats what Short term and long term fuel trims are there for. :rolleyes Jeez.
