6485, Hooked up the intercooler Posted by Stan2gnt, Jun-20-01 03:44 AM
The funny part is MWCs piping fit without modification. Didn't have to make one cut or anything. Odd being he had an HRC turbo which is at least a few inches to the right of the star turbo. Not to mention he had the small Greddy and I have a Starion. Only thing is it sits a little crooked but it fits and thats good enough for now. Only drove it enough to set the boost. First drive I noticed boost had dropped about 1 to 1.5psi. Not bad considering its 2.5" piping. So I went to turn the boost up and it barely went over 6psi so I thought let me turn the screw a little more agrressive next time. Well the damn thing shot to 10psi quick fast and I let off. After about 4 drives around the block I settled on about 8.5psi. Only thing I've had time to notice is the tires break away alot easier and launching without bogging is a little easier. Also did the Jason Esi-T touch the intercooler test. Likewise it was hot on the intake side and cool on the exit side. Somewhere between the intercooler exit and the TB the pipe still manages to get hot but the air is cold as it leaves the intercooler. Only other thing is I had to mount the filter directly to the compressor which is right in front of the hot radiator. Sooner or later I'll deal with that. Well I'm gonna whip it a bit to and from work, hopefully get into a few races. I started the install at 6:30am and was adjusting boost by 9am. I guess I'll do the AFC tommorow if I feel so inclined (I'm so lazy right now). I'll take some pics when I get my camera back but it looks exactly like it looked in MWCs car.

Don't you just love having that great intercooler effect for a fraction of the cost.
Also, if your HP ever reaches levels where it's time to upgrade, it should be a lot easier to switch out intercoolers (already hacving the basic piping in-place) while at the same time being able to sell that high-demand starion i/c at a decent profit.
Way to go man! (time to do some hunting) :-)

Excellent
Would you be happen to be selling the Starion intercooler or did you just buy the pipes? Someone should mass produce dem piping, they make some good money. :P
Is it better to have the intercooler piping go from the star stage on position thats pointing up or is it better to have it in the stage 2 position pointing downward? Or does it not really matter? I really don't wanna take the turbo off to install the IC :(

I will be intercooled in a couple weeks. I can't wait!!! No more letting off the gas to stop the engine from getting too hot!!

Whoa you can tell if your engine is getting hot when your gassing it a lot? Man I really need to get an AF gauge or EGT!!! Just tonight I chased a FC RX7 down the freeway and when I got off I started seeing smoke rising from the hood. Freaked the hell out of me but, I'm pretty sure the engine was still ok.

Hades....duuuuuude....that BB Garrett is a monster turbo. You better get an EGT RIGHT AWAY and maybe turn the boost down some!
Geez. "Smoke rising from the hood." I'm not a mechanic or anything, but hey: That's NOT good! :P That would really freak the shit outta me.
I'll set up a foundation for ya or something .. :-) lol....just PLEASE turn down the boost or get some more fuel or something. Damn..."smoke rising from the hood"....sheesh =-/

Yeah smoke under the hood sounds like something leaked/spewed. My coolant temp ran a little higher before I hooked it up but underhood temps were regular turbo hot. Still haven't even got the oil breather thing yet except the one time I looked just out of curiousity and saw a little dried oil just below the breather.

When my coolant line sprung a leak smoke was every where!!! The coolant residue is still on my engine. Smells funny too. Check your little coolant line over the manifold (a 3" rubber line). And it might just be because your turbo is new. Could have grease and stuff from the install burning off of it.

LAST EDITED ON 20-Jun-01 AT 09:09 PM (PST)Thanks Jason. Hell yeah its faster (after a little more driving). BOV even pops harder. I like it VERY much. Engine even runs cooler! What happened is I bought the intercooler from MWC awhile ago when he upgraded to the Greddy but Jason had already bought the upper pipe and I dont know what happened to the lower pipe. So I set out to make my own piping eventually. Then a stroke of bad luck happened and MWC was selling the greddy and piping. Funny thing is I didn't offer to buy the Greddy although he told me it was for sale 1rst because I thought I couldn't afford it. Then I find the son of a gun sold it for just $350. For that I would have bought the whole set up but since he had an offer already by then I just bought the piping and mated it to his old intercooler I bought. As for the compressor housing. It doesn't matter how its rotated. I left it there because 1) it would have been a bitch to rotate it. basically I'd have to remove the turbo and 2) the HRCs stage 2 is in a simular location so it was easy to mate the piping. I guess the only advantage of rotating it down would be a shorter pipe to the intercooler if thats an advantage.
