64720, Seriously thinking about going standalone, but... Posted by TXTurboGS, Feb-05-04 06:31 AM
... my main concern is drivebility(sp). Have in mind I will be using my car as my daily driver. I am using the emanage right now and where I live or nearby, it is hard to find a place where they know something about it. I was thinking AEM EMS. The 4g63 guys are using it with 625cc injectors and dailry driving their cars without problems. Anyway, any comments or suggestions are appreciated.

I would like to know more about emanage right now i run 50lb injectors and using SAFC and SFMU to regulate the fuel... How easy was emanage to setup and configure/tune.... Do you like it?

To be honest with you, I haven;t had the chance to use it as much. I got my car back and all I've been having is trouble with it. Not the emanage, the car. Give me a few weeks and I shall tell you how it went. I am going to another dyno that knows how to tune the damn thing, LOL.
Murix and Jamesman have the emanage installed. I have tried reaching Murix to see if he lent me his MAP as his setup looks like mine, no luck. He is running the 50lb injectors, Jamesman has the 440cc.

In my opinion, unless the stand alone you're contemplating, does a fantastic job of intuitively figuring out its own map, with closed loop capability, tackles related timing issues without much of a hitch, uses an IAT sensor, and features knock sensing capabilities, I would go with the 8 injector setup.
To me, that's the way to go since it will retain and incorporate, to at least some degree, all of the above features. Additionally, it's much cheaper, and you don't have to go to any of the off-boost tuning issues. You're ready to roll right away, and your mileage won't suffer at all, so long as you're not gunning it.
Therefore, if you're not willing to spend the big bucks on a serious standalone (one that incorporates all of the above features) and also go to the trouble and relative danger of the necessary setup and tuning, I recommend 8 injectors.
Cost of Standalone is about $1200-$2500. Sensors may not be included as well as dyno tuning time and injectors. That could be an additional $400-$500. I'm talking serious injectors too, 550cc and up.
Cost of EIC is about $250. Injectors needed to supplement can be about $100-150 or less if you just go with 4 extra stockers. Bungs are $40. And custom welding work about $50-100, if you choose not to use epoxy.
I didn't add anything like return fuel lines or FPR's, since they're necessary for both. Just think about it.

Where can I read more about the 8 injector setup? Thanks

If you serious about going standalone i would download there software and try using it. You can still use a lot of the features in the program and test things out. I would definately look into the Tec 3 standalone it seems like the best for our cars. The aem one doesn't have base maps for our cars and isn't plug and play at all.

The 8 injector setup is a great way to go for boosted fueling. Fine tunability under boost with a laptop is just perfect, while we still retain the stock ECU for all other functions. It works very, very well, and is relativly cheap, compared to other alternatives. It does take some fabrication, but that's really not that hard to do. I'll be doing this setup very soon here, and I actually came up with a new spot to put the second fuel rail/injectors. Much more user friendly, and workable, without much, if any room constraints.

that the 2nd time I've seen you mention that Matt...I'm curious to see were your' bonna but that 2nd rail....and some time in the future I may be calling on you to help me tune mine :thumbsup

Hehe..I will have plenty of pictures for all to see :) I'm actually surprised no one has tried this yet }(

I like your comments on both counts. The AEM in my mind isn't a good alternative. It's hardly plug-n-play, and most people I've heard use it, have had more problems than not.
With regard to the TEC3, that one does have most of the features, I noted above. Two things to remember though, one, it's expensive. It's on the higher end scale for standalones in terms of costs. IIRC, it's close to the tune of $1600-$2200 depending on the options you choose. Secondly, you have to rig up a timing wheel next to your CS pulley. It's not the end of the world or anything, but it will require some know-how.

I, too, like the 8-injector setup. Besides going with a true standalone, it has to be one of the best alternative fuel setups out there. The fuel system could support high boost and bigger turbos without the "other" things needed for piggyback or standalones. For example, I currently run 625cc's with my Gen 6 DFI. The warm up fuel delivery is inversely proportional to coolant temp. That means you can't just start the car and go or the car will buck and bog. Aside from not having timing control and the warm up issue, the GEN 6 is great, but being that I drive my car 3-5 times a week, it's not the most efficient setup in terms of fuel economy. If I could start over, and I weren't going with a true standalone, I'd probably go with the 8-injector setup (just my opinion.):)
