6435, HRC stage one psi question? Posted by guest, Jun-18-01 01:29 PM
I have the stage one 5-7 psi actuator. I am hitting 7 psi consistently. I am at 94 psi of fuel pressure at full boost and my Air / fuel gauge is reading rich. EGT gauge is at about 1400-1450 at the most (in down pipe) at full boost. I am kind of worried about this. Could it have to do with the altitude? I am putting on a 3" exhaust soon. I think that will keep the temps down some. And the intercooler isnt far away maybe a couple months. I just want to see what everyone that has experience with the hrc kit thinks about this. I have to say that I like 7 psi though!!!! I just want to be safe.

6436, Here's my take... Posted by JasonESi_T, Jun-18-01 03:28 PM
LAST EDITED ON 18-Jun-01 AT 08:29 PM (PST)I had a stage one HRC for a long time and must say...I maybe hit 7 psi once. I was almost consistent at 5 psi and some days I hit 6.
I have heard altitude does have a bearing on where your psi is, but I would bet you don't live anywhere where the altitude as at such an extreme, your psi would consistently boost at 7 psi. I'm glad you have an EGT guage. Right away, it's telling us that you're running a bit hot. If you're at 1400-1450, that converts to something like 1600-1650. And remember, read the discussion on EGT placement, and you should probably throw in a +\- error of 50 degrees or something, so you should definitely be concerned.
I would call HRC and see if they can recommend either a good deal on a stage 2 upgrade or replacing your wastegate. You may also want to check the hose that runs from your wastegate to your compressor housing. It wouldn't necessarily surprise me if there was a small leak in that hose that would cause a leak that may be affecting your boost.

Thanks Jason!! Yeah I am a bit worried about it. I dont think that the hose has a leak but I will check it. I have been letting off the gas when i hit 1400 degrees. I dont want to run too hot. If only I had an intercooler. I kinda like 7psi but it is high for non intercooled.

I will also add that seeing 6-7 psi boost is high for a stage one because that kit comes with a 5 psi actuator. I'd be very careful to let off the gas if you see 7psi; you'd be close to "detonation" range. If the hose from the actuator to the turbo is fine, then you might want to call HRC. Who knows, you may have a faulty 5 psi actuator, or even the stage 2 8psi actuator by mistake.
Also, your EGT temp is pretty high. Take it easy for now, until you get an intercooler.
