64139, What FMU?
Posted by Collente, Jan-26-04 11:55 AM
I am just contemplating on which FMU to use.

SFMU - $250, and I have used it before. Can tune pretty well and it is widely used. Stable. Proven.

The fmu -- ~$100, I already have a 1:1 on the car. But adjustability blows.

Craptech -- Wont use.

The new unit from Chill Factory. Baby blue uses it along with others. Seams to be working pretty well. Cheaper then the SFMU, but tuning seams more difficult. Not really proven.

If you guys have any other suggestions that would be great. All of your recommendations would help great.

TAI!!

that new fmu is from chill factory. you could also use an aeromotive 1:1 that unit is pretty easy to adjust.

The aeromotive 1:1 is just that a 1:1 right? It doesnt alter fp into boost does it?

I already have a 1:1 so no need.

Choosing an FPR kinda requires knowledge of what you're using it for...

Which 1:1 do you have? I need an Aeromotive 13109, and I don't need this SFMU sitting here...

I took off my stock fpr for my old sfmu and destroyed it in the process. That is why the 1:1 is on there.

I have a built 420a with boost. 310cc injects.

In that case, I'd try and choose between the SFMU and Chillfactory. The 310cc's will definitely benefit from and adjustable idle pressure. Even if you don't have 440's right now, you'll probably want them soon, and then you'll definitely need an adjustable idle.

The SFMU is my personal choice, but the CF-FPR is a good unit. The biggest difference between the HRC and CF FPR as I understand it is the way it's connected to the vacuum source. Jamesman is trying an experiment right now, running the SFMU hooked up the way CF is doing it... although the way Hahn and Ayala are playing cat and mouse right now, it's hard to say exactly what the hell is going on. Get the SFMU, at least you know what it does and how to hook it up.

Would either of you guys like to unload those SFMU's? I've got a set of 30lb injectors and the Cartach unit is calibrated for the stockers so even with the bleed screw all the way out, I'm still seeing WAY high fuel pressures. I contacted HRC about this and they said that the Cartech was NEVER INTENDED for other-than-stock injectors. Oh well. So, I'm looking for a S-FMU, ASAP! Please, hit me up on email and let me know if you'd be willing to sell it and the disks/rings! Jeremy.Sturm@ssa.gov and/or Jeremy.Sturm@cox.net Thanks!

Len's car is doing 11's (and soon 10's with 500 turbo hp). No piggy backs just the Chill Factory fuel pressure regulator.

Can you tell me how that isn't proven?

SFMU all the way. Great configurability, and tuneability, and rock solid fuel pressures. Wouldn't run anything but.

Why is everyone afraid to try the Chill Factory unit? It's incredible the kind of power it supports with no ill effects.

Works better
Costs less
more compact size

what's not to love?

Nothing against it, but I just belive the SFMU is a more versitle product. Price- Howell has the CF for 230. If you want to adjust the rate of gain, with the "optional" tuning hardware kit (which you WILL need at a certain point), thats another 35 bucks. So for 265, compared to the 285 for the SFMU(which comes will every piece of tuning hardware already), price really isn't a debate. The SFMU does have more fine tunability over the CF, as set fuel pressure limits, adjustable idle fuel pressure limit(lets you run a constant fuel pressure under idle, then starts to rise when it sees boost- CF doesn't do that). So for a 20 dollar difference, I would go with the SFMU. Thats just me though. The CF works, and does it well, but comparing features to features, I believe the SFMU comes out on top by a margin. Even so, rising rate fuel pressure regulators are not the best solution for fuel on a boosted motor. Yeah, it works, and you can go fast at the strip, but when it comes to fine tunability, esp at all varying boost pressures(as you would see on the street), the best bet is an stand alone, or the next best thing, the 8 injector setup, which can fine tune fuel maps with a laptop.
