63953, timing retardation ;) Posted by siueclipse, Jan-22-04 05:02 PM
ok.. simply question.. i have cam gears.. i need to retard my timing. what should the setting be to give me a place to start with.
thanx james

Step ONE: Buy an ignition that can do timing retard
STEP TWO: Ask this question again when you can actually do ignition timing retard

I agree. Simply put, set them to 0 to get you started... I'm running stock cams, and wasn't able to notice anything on the dyno to talk about after screwing around for an hour at Buschur's without an ignition. Your situation will be different with more aggressive cams, but you'll need to be able to control spark.

First you need to determine are you talking about
Ignition Timing (when the spark happens, controlled by a MSD\Crane ignition box)
OR
Cam Timing (when the valves open and close, controlled by adjustable cam gears)

considering he said cam gears.. he probably meant cam timing, but ignition timing needs to be addressed to see any benefit.

Yeah, you probably want more advance. Our stock ecu is tuned VERY conservatively. I actually boost at partial throttle to get more timing advance at 12 psi. It makes a lot more power and my egt's hold steady at 1550. I dunno if your turbo or not, but I think you would want more advance. If that's the case you need an AFX ecu or a standalone ems. Our car's NA will not benifit from any timeing tard. :7

what is your Air fuel ratio?
11.8+?

here is a question. if you buy cams, is there any benefit to buying cam gears other than aesthetic(sp) reasons?

well, thats what i get for posting a message while being drunk.
hehe.. i meant what should be done baout tuning the cam gears.. not ignition timing.

Ditto..
My suggestion is to leave the exhaust cam alone, if you're running a stock ecu for fuel. Otherwise, you're taking yourt cam angle magnet out of sync, and your injector timing will be off. Might not hurt anything, but better safe than sorry. Advance the intake cam a few degrees at a time until you start to lose power.

leave the stock timing if you have stock cams. like ^^ said, spark timing needs to be addressed

ok this guy has adjustable cam gears, but wants to retard his ignition timing. He has a high powered turbo engine so I guess he is trying to fight knock. Basically you have the wrong stuff, but are trying to do the right thing. Cam gears will not directly affect ignition timing. You need some sort of adjustable ignition box.

Now I have a question. The cam angle sensor tells the ECU where the cam lobes are in relation to the crank. This basically tells the ECU when to fire the injectors?? <----Is that right?
Basically what I am asking is: The cam angle senors deals with the injector firing, but does it affect ignition timing any??

The crank and cams sensors work togeather I believe. The ECU will throw a CEL if it can tell they are outta wack.
Skrilla, I really have never tuned w/ a wideband. I seem to make a lot more power with a little more fuel and a little more advance than I do with a lean mix at wot with less timing advance. The differance is huge, with a little more advance my tires just break loose. It leads me to believe the extra fuel is making the mix burn a little slower and the timing is makeing up for it. It's working well thus far. I'll go partial throttle @ 12 psi and once I see my egt getting to 16 ill give it 100% throttle to retard the timing and drop back down to ~1525F.

For the longest time, I thought I was the only one that did that and that my car or sfmu is somewhat screwed up. I would go partial throttle and feel a very good amount of power and let the egt go up, as soon as it get"s to about sixteen i go full throttle and the temp seems to go down and then steadily rise

there isnt to much outta wack to the crank angle sensor, if its not reading right the car doesnt start. doing my rebuild we forgot to tighten the screw in all the way and the car wouldnt even fire. we thought it was my msd but it turned out to be something that simple. dont know about the cam angle sensor though.

Yeah, exactly! You need the extra timing at lower boost levels.
