63868, Finally found out what happened when I blew my motor
Posted by Dualgen2, Jan-21-04 03:04 AM
Well for you guys that have been on here awhile or ever paid attention to my sig, I blew my motor on the dyno about 2 years ago when I asked the guy to turn up the boost from 4 1/2psi to 8psi. The first time it was at 6psi, then 10 1/2psi then turned it down and still hit 10 1/2 psi then finally went down to about 8psi but it was to late. On those two runs hitting 10 1/2psi I had a lot of oil coming out of my breather and I needed a new motor or I could rebuilt my own. Someone on here was ready to buy my turbo kit so I bought a stock motor and I had the motors switched and the turbo kit taken off. During that process the guy changes his mind saying he has no $ but buys another turbo kit a couple days later so I put the turbo kit back on another stock motor when I would of just done a Howell rebuild.
Anyways I sold that motor to Corbin this past weekend and he just took it apart and told me I cracked the ring lands in cylinder #1 and #4, which I had guessed happened since my compression sucked in those cylinders but now I know for sure. Just thought I'd share what happened after all of this time.

So basically a stock block is only good for around 8psi. What cause the ring lands to crack?? The high cylinger pressure, detonation, lean?? I was told that the rods are the weakest point, but it seems like the ring lands are the weakest.

Statistically on this board, it seems blown motors--cracked ringlands and/or piston--occur between 8-10 psi. I guess our stock piston just can handle that much boost:shrug

there is a guy on this board, i forget who, running 19 psi on stock rods...

but yea, i agree with you.

i thought the pistons/rings/ringlands are what can't handle much boost
there are a few here (can't remember names) who are running between 14-20psi on stock rods with upgraded pistons and rings and such...

but once again im a noob dont take anything i say too seriously lol

How do the stock rods hold up with forged pistons?

That would be me running 19psi on stock rods...

The car is off the road this week while I do some work on the manifold... ;)

Some people get forged pistons, new rings and get the stock rods shot-penned (sp?) Supposedly our rods can handle about 300-350WHP but it varies from car to car. We might all have 420A's but none of us have the 420A in the same condition. Everyones car is different. I was turbo'ed for 3 months and blew my motor while Corbin has been turbo'ed for liekk 4 years or more even on the stock bottom end. It's a little luck along w/ not being greddy and saying around 6-8psi intercooled w/ a decent fuel setup.
