It's never a bad thing to have.

However, i never had one in three turbocharged years and never had a problem with the downpipe. I recently had one installed "just because".

Not to mention you aren't using the downpipe support bracket.

Theres a small bracket that sticks out of the block near the water pipe that has 2 holes in it. Even the factory downpipe with flex section needed support.

I'm amazed the manifold doesn't crack NER style with all that weight hanging off it and bouncing.

Star manifolds are BEEFY. Typically you'll break bolts off in the head before you'll hurt the manifold.

I would say that a flex pipe isn't need as long as the weld is of good quality. The picture looks like a lot of welding but if it doesn't penetrate through than it is useless. It looks like a pretty ugly weld. I have had only the downpipe hooked up (no exhaust or supports, just freely hanging) and it has been holding strong for more than a year and a half.
