63392, A fuel problem that I PRAY you guys can answer Posted by QC DSM ESiT, Jan-11-04 04:03 PM
Okay it all started about a week ago. I posted a previous question in the General section about a frozen fuel line. I thought it was frozen because it was about 2 degrees out and it might have been frozen but ever sence it has been acting funny. The night I thought it was frozen I tried to unfreeze it by putting in a bottle of HEET. I then drove it home from the random parking that I got stuck in. The car was still acting wierd but I figured it was just the cold. I drove it the next day to fill the tank full of gas and added another bottle of HEET so I wouldn't be stranded again if it got freakin cold again. I was still acting wierd after a couple of days. The aux. fuel pump was changing pitches all the time and when I would give it gas it pretty much would shut up and make like no noise but when I let off the gas it would hum again and the whole time I was never boosting. Before all of this happened I would hear the fuel pump constantly unless I was boosting and that was the only time it would shut up. I decided to see what would happen when I boosted for a couple of seconds. I was in forth boosted for about 5 sec. I then put it in neutral to get ready to stop at the light. When it was in neutral it stalled out. I then started it back up and ever sence the aux. fuel pump sounds like 1/4 of how loud it normally is. It still idles fine but when I shift it seems laggy and I can feal a vibration on the gas pedal. I have no clue what all of these things mean so I hope you guys can help. BTW on my fuel system I have the aux. fuel pump and regulator that came in the HRC Stage 1 kit. PLEASE HELP! Thanks in advance.

Temperature seems to affect that cartech a lot. Do you have an egt gauge? I bet you were running too lean too hot egt's. Your car can stall out from that. Check your fuel pressure, I had to jack up my injector scaler to account for the 70 digree drop in temp.

Well when I had the turbo installed the place that did it said it was running a little rich at the time. That was in the summer though so I dunno if the cold could mess it up that much but I'm affraid to boost if it is running to lean or rich. The only gauge I have is the boost gauge. All the other are on my to get list but right now school is making me to poor. I when it stalled out on me after the 5 sec of boosting the engine temp gauge wasn't even to the normal middle like it usually is so I am assuming it wasn't even that warmed up. Any more suggestions would help.

Telltale signs of a Cartech FPR. What's your fuel pressures at idle? Any temperature or elevation change will totally confuse the Cartech and it will cause the fuel pump to make those noises. I could barely get my car to run when I was up in Tahoe at 4000ft and 30* temps. Had to get out and re-adjust the cartech every time I started the car just to drive anywhere.
It could be anything, but I have $50 on the cartech. Got any friends with an SFMU you could try out?

I have no friends that would have that. I'm sorry it may sound noobish when I ask this but I'm not down with the lingo, what's does SFMU stand for. I don't know anyone else that has set up like mine. The only people I know have factory turbos already and usually don't mess with the fuel set. Should I replace the Cartech or just kinda deal with it untill it gets warmer out. I am gunna hook up the fuel pressure gauge that came with my HRC kit. What should the normal idle pressure be when I do this?

You want the idle fuel pressure to be around 50 psi. If it is below 40 psi, you definately need to bring it up by turning the allen adjustment screw on the top of the regulator clockwise (and don't forget to tighten the locking nut again once it's set). If you run the gauge out of the hood and tuck it under the windshield wiper blade, you can view the pressure as you drive. Your wide open WOT (Wide Open Throttle) fuel pressure should be around 80 psi at 5-6 psi of boost.
