63384, which way to stick in my wisecos? other questions too, get your ass in this thread Posted by turbo8u, Jan-13-04 09:25 AM
ok i have some standard bore wisecos and i cant seem to find out which one goes which direction in which cylinder, lol. what else could i NOT know...? well theres no marks or arrows or anything on them so i have noo clue. help me out here.
another thing, any tips on installing the wrist pin and locks? ive never had to do this before but want to learn so how do i install wrist pins and locks? mototfool? dino? mototool? any help is much appreciated.
also, i broke my fucking crank sprocket so i need another one (smooooth ha?) but those of you who've done a rebuild know that things a bitch if you dont have the right tool. i eventually made something that worked, so i got it all worked out.
actually, instead of responding to this thread will someone who knows their shit call me? my numner is 949-295-2914 and its on 24/7 so call me up, my names josh.
thanks guys, im lookin forward to this weekend and dropping this beast in _________ 96 talon esi-t san clemente, ca

The pistons are not directional, so you can put them in however you want. I just put mine in with all weisico logos on the underside of the piston, facing the same way..i'm just picky like that. The wrist pins, just oil them up, and push them in, with the rod in the center of the piston. The locks are a bit tricky at first, but once you do a few, the rest are easy. You have to push in the locks, starting at one point, then working it down into the grove as you go along. Kinda hard to explain without showing. Just take care not to scratch the piston with the locks...

63409, RE: which way to stick in my wisecos? other questions too, get your ass in this thread Posted by DarkOne, Jan-12-04 04:38 AM
The lock is basically just a snapring. Put it on like one.
The pistons should be non-directional. We found no offset on my JEs when we installed them, but i was told later that they recommend you put them in with the JE logo facing the exhaust side. Not sure if Weiscos even have a logo...

Turbo8u, this is the second time I get to say "I told you" :) Now get your ass over to my house for a replacement crank sprocket- I just happen to have one. You'll also want the installation tool.
Here's some crappy drawings I made, but it really doesn't matter which way you install em.

Yeah ok.... if you say so. Why is it people bash Wiseco round here? I got my Wiseco's running at 19psi daily on my setup and have had zero problems....

Whatever you say man.... thats funny because I've got over 15,000 miles now on this motor since I rebuilt.... theres a whole lot about my setup that you dont know.... like the fact that my pistons are CUSTOM...
So you can sit there thinking you know what your talking about all you like...
And another thing, when I was recently at the PRI show in Indy I spent quite q while talkin to all of the guys from JE, wiseco and CP... and you know what.... they all have top of the line pistons that are all comparable to each other... so when you actually know the specs of what your talking about then we'll talk...
This is just another one of those internet myths.... saying that Wiseco pistons suck... yeah sure.
How many people have actually melted or blown up wiseco pistons??? How many people over on neons.org are running wiseco pistons... hmmmmm... quite a lot ore than this board, and a lot more of them are putting down more power than most of the guys round here.
I'm not trying to start an arguement here, just saying that a lot of people on the net are closed minded about things that they really don't know about...
We need to start relying on fact... not rumours/myths.....

Here are some facts for you. I have seen several problems with Weisco pistons installed at VT Competition Engine Development in Lansing MI. They do not use the same alloy as JE and CP. They ARE of less quality. The reason you haven't seen it is because 19 psi on a s16g (or equivilant) isnt really putting any forged piston to the test (assuming that it isnt detonating like crazy). Try pushing 800 hp on CP's, then do it on Weisco's. You'll find that CP's survive where Weiscos won't. Also, I have seen several cases of Weisco pistons being more succeptable to detonation than their competitors. They make great pistons for bikes, but that's about it in my opinion. That is, if you're really pushing the limits running serious boost. The reason you don't see many (if any) problems with them around here is because the 420a is still relatively new and not many people are really pushing it to the limits yet (including the neon guys). Go post on NABR asking how some of those guys like Weiscos in their 4g63 and you'll get many ugly stories. For your average performance enthusiest, they'll work just fine, but someone trying to make insane amounts of power should stick with JE or CP.

Matt, your reply is very thought out, but you are assuming that every Wiseco piston is made from the same alloy.... this is simply not true. I must say it was very cool seeing the Wiseco NASCAR and Indycar pistons while I was at the PRI booth.... the Nascar pistons were amazing.... so small... But anyway my point is this... not every pistons is the same or made of the same material... this is true, but then also what makes you think that my Wiseco's are the same as Wiseco's made in the past???
But I do agree that JE and CP are the shit.. althouth I'd probably go with CP if I was going for the max...:thumbsup
I still would like to see peoples real experience with all the different forged pistons and get a comparison... but you have to take into account every part of their setup and the compression and manufacture of the piston in question.... not eveyr piston is made equal...

You will get a hint of why we do not like wisecos when you go to balance them. You say that you looked at both pistons at PRI, but did you really look at them at the same time? I have a feeling that if you did you would definatly notice the difference. I'm not saying that wisecos are crap, they will be fine for most engines, I am saying that they are very low on our list. To add more, We have broken a lot of wiseco pistons, most of them failing in ways that was only due to poor materials and manufacturing practices.

ok need some more help real fast....about the locks....they are BITCHES, ugh. ok i got the wrist pins in, as easy as those were, then got one snap ring in one side but the wrist pin wont go down far enough to give me enough clearance on the other side....i dont fucking get it :shrug, anybody?
wisecos arent as good as CP and JE, duh. but how much do you pay for CP's and JE's? probly twice what i paid. besides, i have a new 0 miles block and standard bore wisecos, how easy is that? drop that shit in. thats the only reason i went with wiseco, i bet you all they will be fine too but we'll just have to see. i'm not going to be running 800hp matt....and no one else on here is either. _________ 96 talon esi-t san clemente, ca

So the spring lock was too large and you had to cut it? That's nice.
Lick, you should be able to pickup 4 JE's 20 over 8.8:1 for ~$350. That's thier most common part for us so they usually have them in stock.

This type of thing is exactly my point. If they didn't take the time to even check the locks, i'm sure the pistons were carefully inspected for flaws.

The funniest part of that statement is that you're trying to justify the low quality of Wiseco pistons by saying you got a deal. Amusing. :wary
Originally posted by turbo8u besides, i have a new 0 miles block and standard bore wisecos, how easy is that? drop that shit in.
Yeah, drop it in! Nevermind getting them BALANCED. Nevermind the piston to wall clearance that won't be correct if you just drop the pistons in. Nevermind all that stuff. It's not important. :thumbsup

Ahh, yes, a fine example of craftsmanship and quality control - that's Wiseco for you :thumbsup You have to cut the locks?! Haahahahaha!
Originally posted by turbo8u i got them all in though and they seem like they'll hold good. my fingers hurt like a BITCH, omg....fuck that shit, JE's are a million times easier
You know, they make things like pliers, and scratch awls and other things normal people call "tools" ... you should try them someday.
And maybe JE's are easier because they at least eyeball the size of the wristpin. Wiseco just has some 4 year old ethiopian throw some locks in the box and hope they fit right. Way to go Wiseco! :thumbsup

You do a good job answering your own questions. It's indicative of the quality of your pistons.

Hey, don't forget to post the pics when you pull them back out, too, okay? After they get hot, and your piston-to-wall clearance goes to shit, I want to see pics of the scraped up cylinder walls. Way to save $20!

WTF.. thats not very comferting to know that you had to cut a clip that was to big. Then you finally got it to go on. I hope that shit holds up for you man. I dont know of anyway sort of stress tests. But if your not 100% sure I wouldn't do it. That would suck a dick to shoot a piston through your head.

-"The funniest part of that statement is that you're trying to justify the low quality of Wiseco pistons by saying you got a deal. Amusing."
thats funny? i'm only going to run 15psi, i think they'll be fine. why dont you shut the fuck up, no one wants to hear your bullshit.
-"Yeah, drop it in! Nevermind getting them BALANCED. Nevermind the piston to wall clearance that won't be correct if you just drop the pistons in. Nevermind all that stuff. It's not important."
thats why i checked the clearances with feeler gauges, mototard.
-"Just don't get them hot, and you'll be set, right?"
that was pretty clever....<cough>
-"You know, they make things like pliers, and scratch awls and other things normal people call "tools" ... you should try them someday.
i used tools, but its easier to use your fingers. you dont even understand the way it all looked so shut the fuck up.
-" Wiseco just has some 4 year old ethiopian throw some locks in the box and hope they fit right. Way to go Wiseco!"
yup, pretty sure exactly what all the guys at neons.org would say too
-"You do a good job answering your own questions. It's indicative of the quality of your pistons."
you think im going to boost like 25psi or something. i have a sidemount, and a 16g, i'm going to run 15, the wisecos will be fine.
-"Hey, don't forget to post the pics when you pull them back out, too, okay? After they get hot, and your piston-to-wall clearance goes to shit, I want to see pics of the scraped up cylinder walls. Way to save $20!"
mototard.....no one wants to hear you talk shit. do you ever post something positive? if not, shut the fuck up
im curious as to what the mods think of you and your willingness to bash so quickly. you need the fuckin boot imo, get the fuck out of here with your negative comments and queer comments on dino's man juice you fuckin queer.

This is all rather amusing....
Before you all go jumping to conclusions.... here's a little about my wiseco's...
They were all perfectly balanced when I got them.. an dyes I checked them. The wrist pin and locks were the right size... but mine are installed different from the norm... My pistons were made custom.... they were a new design at the time when I got them... (about 6 months ago now)
Oh, and as for me not comparing pistons at the PRI show... whatever you say buddy... you obviously know me a lot better than I know myself.... :wary How bout next December you come take a look with me.... have YOU ever seen some of the Wiseco Nascar or Indy pistons? Have YOU ever seen some of the sweet custom pistons that they have?
I'm not trying to say that Wiseco are the shit... everyone knows CP and JE are the best untill proven otherwise.... But know this... I'm running a pretty unusual setup here.... I'm going to find out EXACTLY how much boost and power the Wiseco's and my stock rods can take... :thumbsup

that's pretty funny. PRI? where's PRI? We only had a booth there.......
I'm not saying that they can't build sweet looking custom pistons, I just got tired of pulling engines apart because of stupid piston failures that should have never happened.

ok i found out that the piston's wrist pin is .004 offset from the outside of the skirt and the short side = exhaust side.

350 crank?!?!?!....then what the hell do i need new rods for....im only running MAXIMUM 18psi with a 14b 8.6:1 compression....do i really need new rods...i was estimating that to be about 275-300hp to the crank...also have exhaust, udp, msd, wires, camgears..... do you think i really need new rods? doug

63629, RE: which way to stick in my wisecos? other questions too, get your ass in this thread Posted by DarkOne, Jan-15-04 06:12 AM
350 or so. it's a rough estimate. At the wheels that would be low 300's. I made that on 15psi untuned, on a turbo much bigger than a 14b, though.

Cool, I didn't notice you guys there... if I had I would have stopped by...
And if my Wiseco's can hold all I throw at them then all the better for me I guess.... But my next motor will more thna likelly be a diff setup... so I'll see what I can get out of this one....
And the stock rods aint that bad, their powdered forged rods.... not as good as regular billet forged, but better than your average rod....

The only problem I see with this arguement is the comparison of custom Wisco's to their standard stock pistons. I'm going to bet they are not the same material composition or craftsmanship. You get what you pay for in most cases.

I just had a gas station chicken and cheese burrito. YAY!
I think the only problem with my Wiescos was that I installed them myself. :P (Anyone else picture Mototool falling out of his chair laughing right now?) Haha. Relative to the subject of the thread, since it's seems like this is a catch-all thread for just about everything piston/rod related, my 10.5:1s had to be installed a specific way. I learned this the hard way when I listened to the choad at the machine shop when he said to be sure to install them a specific way and when John and I put the head on a cranked it by hand, they made contact. Had to pull it all apart and spin them 180.
Oh well. I'm going to be probably doing a re-ring in a few weeks time when I get the head replaced. I'll be sure to take pictures of everything after 11k or so on them and we'll see what we shall see. :shrug

I got your back, I installed stock bore 12.5:1 on my 1st rebuild no problems and still no problems (I sold the engine to my friend). His compression is good but not the 12.5 (no honing=compresion loss) but he runns it still. the only down fall is that he goes through 1/2 pint every other week, really that's no big deal to me...I say go for it you will be good
