ok.. im not retarded and i know how to read but msd's website doesn't really tell you the differences between the 6211 and the 6212. both seem to be programmable.. but how far got the 6212 go? can someone please explain this mind boggling bullshit to me?

heh
thanx

the 6211 is only "programmable" with the dip switches on the side of the unit.
the 6212 is truely programmable with a laptop. it also has a few more features than the 6211.
hope this helps.

well that explains more.. but the extra programmable.. hmm ??

the 6212 has the feature of retarding x degrees of spark advance per x psi of boost, like the Crane unit. for this to work, you need to buy the special MAP sensor from MSD and you need to connect to the ignition controller with a laptop to program the new curve.

the 6211 cannot retard ignition timing in relation to boost, but it can be faked pretty well with the dip switches.

I just installed the 6212. Like ^ said, it's programable via serial. I also got the optional map sensor, but thus far I have no need to retard the timing, even at 22 psi.

It has 2 programable rev limiters, 3 switchable retard settings, and will retatd based on boost or rpm. I actually have not used any of the advanced functions of it yet, exept for the stutter box/rev limiter.

For the rev limiter I mounted a led, switch, and momentary buttion on the pillar gauge pod. The switch selects which rev limiter to use, when I push the clutch pedal down (switch on the clutch pedal too) and hit the buttion the limiter turns on and the led lights to show it's active. When I release the clutch the limiter goes off. So far this is the only cool thing I have done with it. :shrug

This is more commonly reffered to as the "Stutterbox" correct?

James has been telling me stories about scaring the hell out of kids that rev on him- 5 seconds on the stutterbox and the kids give up before the light even turns green. }(

Sorry to sound like such a no0b here, I'm just toying with ideas for a year or so down the road. Would this be the type of thing to use in the upper rpms with an AFC (or emanage by that time) to run a turbo with the AFX ECU (which advance timing to make power) on a high CR motor? I'm just playing with the idea of slapping on a huge turbo next year maybe that wont see boost until above 4 grand, but I think I would need to retard the ignition up there, contrary to what the ECU wanted to do and then maybe have a different fuel curve for running high boost at the track. Considering I will be able to wind her up to 8000rpm by then, I think I could make good use of a larger turbo like that, but I would need something to keep it safe. Would this unit work? Or am out in left field looking at the wall? :P

Thanks!

Brian, Yes and Yes. :P

I would sell your AFX ecu if you go turbo. The stock ecu advance is almost perfect for boosted operation. It was tuned to run on rubbing alcohol if need be. That's an exaggeration, but you get what I am saying. Check out the "How much boost can we run on pump gas?" Thread for some very good info on timing advance and boost.

is the 6212 really worth the extra money or will the 6211 work just fine for someone who wnats more spark?

The 6211 is fine, but I really like my 6212. If your not worried about making a fine tuned timing retard map it's cool. I got mine at a good price so I said why not.

Personally i think the 6212 is worth the money. summits got it for like 418 that is where i got it from, you will need the tach adapter and optional map sensor for boost dependant retard. you can also use a cam sync sensor to allow the engine to retard on a per cylinder basis. I am going to install the cam sync sensor sometime and see how it works out.

im just wondering if i should spend the extra money. granted ive spent a ton so far, but everything left to buy is very expensive.

Someone really needs to prove to me that pre-emptive knock retard is necessary for a well tuned car up to ~20 psi.
