62817, CF FMU and other fuel Q's........ Posted by Dirty, Dec-28-03 06:05 PM
Well, I think I got everything I need for my fuel setup now.
First question: If I'm gonna use my OE FPR with the Chill Factory FMU, do I need to do anything with the OE FPR or just leave it alone? What about the fuel return line on the OE one?
Second question: Can you please post a pic or two of your FMU (esp. Cartech) so I can see how their mounted? The CF FMU doesn't come with any mounting stuff so I need some ideas. TIA! :thumbsup

I'd highly recommend giving Len a call. He's open 6 days a week and open till 6pm Central standard time.

On a side note, don't let the CF FMU see vacuum. Put the check valve on the vacuum/boost source.

Thura is right. Also, I talked to somebody today at Chill Factory. I'm not sure who it was but he said that us with the later fuel systems can't use the oe FPR with the FMU. He said that I need to block it off and let all the fuel go to the rail. SO I guess it's installed just like the S-FMU, but with different fittings and not mounting bracket. It seems like a nice parts and I hope I can get it on soon.
Question #3: How do you block off the OE FPR and not remove anything else, or is that possible?

hehe, you probably talked to Len. He takes care of technical questions.
Your FPR is mounted back by the gas-tank. You will need to remove it or just by-pass it. Just like the S-FMU. Hope this helps.

OK. I can rip it off, but how do I disable it. Thats sounds like it would be a nicer thing to do.

on second thought I'm pretty sure you need to rip it out. The fuel filter is attached to the regulator.
You'll find it behind the passenger side seat under the car. You can try to remove the compression nut on the stock fuel pump (from inside the car) and the other after the fuel filter leading to the solid fuel line running under the car.
Those will be the biggest pain of the turbo install.
best of luck:thumbsup

From what I remember all you have to do is unbolt the the regulator from the fuel filter and then re-attach the fuel line directly to the filter.

Ya, but I would recommend replacing the old fuel filter anyway. I also believe I saw a fuel filter in that pic he posted.

Yeah im pretty sure i see earl's inline fuel filter in the pic. Is that the 6an fuel filter? If so, you just have to take the stock fpr/fuel filter out, attach one end of the 6an hose to the tank, and then attach the other end of the 6an hose(should be about 8-9 feet) to the fuel filter. Then connect the fuel filter to the 6an fitting on the stock feed line thats about 6 inches before the rail. Hope that helps, Jason explained it to me:thumbsup

hey dirty! for what its worth, i just removed the OE FPR and plugged the hole with a (i think) 14mm bolt and just used the same copper washer that was there for the FPR. Fuel Filter stayed put!

Thanx for the replys guys! I'm gonna have to wait a few days to do all the fuel stuff cause when I was test mounting my lines, fmu and guage, I noticed that they would have constant stress on them because of the angles they would be mounted. I just ordered some angled hose ends and they should be here in a fews days.
I was gonna try to use the OE filter (new one) and maybe use the Earls on the return line or something. I didn't know the Earls filter was just a screen inside. You can look through it and read a book, it's so thin. I just didn't know if that would be good enough, but since I have it I might as well use it somewhere. Does anyone know how much pressure is in the return line?

I wouldn't put a filter in the return line. Increasing resistance could cause problems with your fuel pressure.
Remember regulators work by changing the amount of fuel flow back to the tank (there by increasing pressure at the rail).
You will want the freest flowing return line back to the tank.
