6235, EGT Probe placement? Posted by phrenzy, Jun-12-01 08:31 AM
Where exactly should I have my EGT probe tapped after the turbo...how far down the downpipe? I don't want to tap into the runner 'cause I don't want the probe to break and end up in my turbo.

getting this post back to the top. I want to know too. I want it in the downpipe b/c it's easier and I don't mind welding a bung - now that's a funny word!

I put mine in the down pipe as well... about 2" down! Then I just add about 200* to what the gauge shows to get my final reading..

i got ur probe placement right here baby! haha j/k
on the realz i thot it was best to put it on the turbo manifold on the 4th port about 2 inches away from block. i think thats how the 4g63 guys do it

Oh yea... u know i be pimpin!

That's where it would ideally go...in the exhaust manifold runner, but I don't trust it there. The absolute last thing I need a week before the shootout is a 1 1/2" piece of metal shooting through my turbos exhaust turbine. That would be bad...plus I'm pretty good at math, I can add 200 to whatever.

6241, You guys are on Crack... Posted by Skrilla, Jun-17-01 11:17 AM
...why on Earth do some of you guys place the EGT probe, the most important piece of tuning a turbocharged car, in your down pipe where the measurements are WRONG. You engines EGT temps only has to be off 50* for a few minutes of hard driving before the damage is done and you REAP it's rewards later. The f*cking probe won't disconnect and end up in your turbo, I don't think I have EVER heard of that! A couple things to remeber are that HEAT is NOT cumulative OR averaged, which means 1200*F from your #1 runner and 1700*F from your 4th at NEAR THE LIMIT tuning will not result in 1450 OR 2900. Relying on an inaccurate temp then subtracting 200* is rediculous. One question comes up when I read that. WHAT IF. What if it was a cold night and the heat dissipates quicker, what do you do then subtract 100*? Come on, I can think of 3 other scenarios off the top of my head, but I think you get the point. What I'm saying is that you want to be able to observe the worst condition on your engine as much as possible, which is why the turbo guys place their probe on the worst runner. Their worst runner BTW is #1, ours is number 4. If you are worrying about the runners (more importantly cylinders) then mount 4 EGTs or get a 4 channel EGT system all connected to 1 gauge.
Kory has the right idea here and is, at least, what everyone else should do when working with one probe, but maybe some of you are saying - Skrilla doesn't know what the hell he's talking about he's never owned a turbo and his 2GNT isn't either, well just for the record I did used to own a 1G AWD. I know a few things, like that not ONE Honda I worked on could ever take anything past 7PSI intercooleed stock. Anyway when tuning their engines I have to be even more careful!

...and have mine mounted on the #4 runner.
If your probe breaks off from heat or whatever, there certainly can't be much left of it besides ashes anyhow.

#4 runner, even before i installed the turbo.
It's not gonna break. Are you nuts?

I have mine mounted in runner #1. Can someone please tell me why cylinder 4 would run leaner when it is at the beginning of the fuel rail, therefore should get a more constant fuel supply... Just curious, since I am using a different placement than others...

I've always been of the belief that it gets hotter than the others because of the EGR. The line for the EGR dumps almost exclusivly in the #4 intake runner. I may be wrong.

While I think the EGR has something to do with the higher temps, I want you guys to concider the coolant flow pattern. Fresh out of the radiator as cool as the coolant is going to get enters the block right by cylander 1 and goes through the block getting hotter and hotter, and the last cylander it cools is cylander 4. and then back into the radiator. Since when I install my ported polished manifold (thanks Skrills) I'm going to cap my EGR, I still think #4 will be the hottest.

Wow is Skrilla bursting with emotions or what???
I have to agree with him though. The probe breaking is a part of the risk factor (a very SMALL risk) compared to getting wrong temps... i.e. Engine rebuild (average rebuild costs more than a turbo, let alone a turbine).
Seriously, I have asked dozens of tuners and I still can never get a straight answer on the temp difference on before or after the turbo.
What I wanna know though, is where did all you guys with HRC manifolds tap into?

It's just a sore spot and this question has come up many a time, and I feel the need to correct the situation and maybe in the long run save sombody's engine:)

Well, I am proud to say that I put my egt in my downpipe :) EGT in the runner blah blah tuning blah blah. How about this? I tune with a wideband 02 sensor on the dyno for exact a/f fuel calibration. THAT is the right way to tune. I use the EGT for after tuning reference. I do not tune for atemp, I tune for a perfect fuel curve. The temp that I see after tuning is complete is what I use as a ref point for future driving. After all, it is a 'gauge' not a 'tuner'. Just had to throw that in there, but I do not discredit previous arguments about the runners as that is the general accepted location, but I did not see it as being necessary and I am lazy.

LAST EDITED ON 18-Jun-01 AT 09:00 AM (PST)Jeez Skrilla, calm down a bit. :P I guess I'll be putting it in the number 4 runner then. I obviously got a bit of bad information, and I appreciate you correcting me.
