60941, Am I stupid or do i have a shitty regulator?
Posted by 97TurboGS, Nov-18-03 06:19 PM
Ok guys, I have a the rising rate FMU that came with the Hahn Stage 1 kit, it's the Cartech/Begi one.

The problems:

1) When connected you nearly have to screw the adjustment bolt all the way in before you can achieve the 55 psi fuel pressure at idle specified in the Hahn manual.

2) Once screwed in all the way, fuel pressure rises to quickly and chokes the motor on throttle pull.

3) When you turn the car off and then back on, fuel skyrockets to 160+ psi and the motor wont start again until you back off the adjustment bolt to release the fuel back thru the return line.

I personally think that this reg is jacked up. Maybe the spring is weak or something. Am I not doing something right? Please let me know b4 i just send the damn thing back to Hahn.

Other useful info:

At idle the manifold pressure is around 20 Vaccuum on the boost gauge.

everyone always bitches that the cartech sucks.... nicknamed it craptech.

vortec imo

Do you recommend that I talk to Hahn? Will they do anything for me? Or should i just chunk it and get the Vortech?

Use the cartech as a paperweight - that's about all it's good for. I had 2 Cartechs from Hahn before I gave up on them. I ended up jumping from Stage 2 to Stage 4 which uses a 1:1 regulator, so I never put one on my car, but have installed them on other cars. The Vortech is much more stable and easier to work with. Money well spent, IMO.

yeah ditch the cartech. try a vortech SFMU unit (that's the adjustable one) it works well.

Is the Vortech FMU still a rising rate regulator? Does it fit the same lines that I currently have? Like the return line and the feed line? Do i have to change the fittings on the hoses? Also, how much does the Vortech FMU run?

Movced from Advanced tech to Turbo tech.. we see this all the time, not advanced.

Also, can the Vortech Standard FMU be used as a stand-alone like the Cartech??? Or would i have to get the Super FMU?

Turbo kits suck without fuel.... :-/

the standard FMU is not an adjustable fuel rise unit. You will need the SFMU for that. as far as the hose connections.. well it has a supply and a return port, and they are both female -6AN fittings.
if you type SFMU in the search, you will get more than enough information on the unit.

your options are to get either the s-fmu from vortech, or build an 8 injector system which would consist of: 1:1 regulator(aeromotive 139.99) 034 extra injector controller (around 300ish) extra fuel rail and higher cc injectors. basically, youll use your stock injectors for the primaries, you will have a near stock idle, but have somethin like 330cc injectors for the secondary rail. the 2ndary kicks in once you hit boost, allowing you all the fuel you will ever need. basically do the math stock(220cc i believe)plus 330's and thats 550cc of total fuel injection at boost. hope that is of some help

heres a link for your viewing pleasure of building an 8 injector fuelsystem http://www.2gnt.com/www/corbin/8inj.html

This fuel management stuff is going to kick my ass..... :-/

I have to spend money either way. I am kinda in a money crunch since i just rebuilt my motor. I hear that any rising rate system would only be good for up to 8 psi or so.

That depends on many more factors than whether or not it is rising rate. Any Fi fuel system is going to be rising rate, even if it is just 1:1.

Like everyone else is saying. Just get the sfmu. This is not uncommon, it IS a common upgrade to the sfmu.

The 8 injector setup is a project, but when you can get it to work and work right it works wonders.

I reccomend the sfmu and use it. Do a search on both and you'll get assloads of info.

you built your motor but kept stock injectors :wary

get the SFMU, the craptech sucks. im int he same ballpark boosting 10psi on a crappy reg is a PITA, fuel pressure is pretty inconsistent.

i noticed one thing though....as the fuel heats up, it makes it leak more...i through on a fuel cooler from summit and it fixed it for a few months, then came back....so i dunno. i'm in ur same shoes, just need the SFMU

good luck :cheers

Aite guys, thx for all the info, imma try another "Craptech" from Hahn since it's gonna be free and under warranty, if that doesn't work, imma have to get another reg. I mean, the Craptech that i have right now, just doesn't work period.

probly the SFMU :rolleyes

Yeah, my cartech did that too. I sold it on ebay for like $125! Muahah!

I'm about 110% sure that another shitty fpr is not going to solve your problem. Pickup the SFMU, or ask hahn about thier new fuel system that is supposed to be out soon. The SFMU is going to use the same stuff as the cartech, in/out/vac but it will have different adapters so you will have to get some 6AN fittings from a local speed shop.

If I were you I would take it easy on the boosting and wait for the new hahn fuel system, I hear it's wicked but they wont release any info on it. :shrug

What about this idea that i have been pondering??????

1) Put my stock fuel system back in. (Is the stock fuel system 1:1?)
2) Upgrade to 450cc injectors.
3) Control the fuel curve with my S-AFC II.

Do you guys think that would work?

Option 2:

1) Leave the hahn fuel booster and get a stand-alone 1:1 fuel regulator.
2) Upgrade to 450cc injectors.
3) Control the fuel curve with my S-AFC II.

How about that one?
61078, RE: Am I stupid or do i have a shitty regulator?
Posted by Cereal5, Nov-20-03 04:40 PM
no that won't work.

Your fuel pressure wouldn't rise with boost. and you'd be stuck with the stock fuel pressure... and with that size injectors, it wouldnt even idle.
61081, RE: Am I stupid or do i have a shitty regulator?
Posted by 96rs-t, Nov-20-03 05:16 PM
hahn tech, says its a restriction in your return line! i've had that fuel problem since i installed the turbo, but i still have not bought the sfmu cuz of money. but i dont think i have a prob likeyours, i still boost nice and run my car all the time
61096, RE: Am I stupid or do i have a shitty regulator?
Posted by 97TurboGS, Nov-21-03 03:25 AM
Why wouldn't it idle?
61105, RE: Am I stupid or do i have a shitty regulator?
Posted by 97TurboGS, Nov-21-03 05:37 AM
Running out of options here then. Imma have to go rising rate then til i can afford a stand-alone fuel management system.

I still don't understand why my car wouldn't idle with 450cc injectors.

5{th safc, 450cc. davefl did that. he ran large injectors with 450cc, controlled the idle with the safc and blew his built motor! the computer advence his timing (which the safc tends to do for our cars), he became lean, then KABLOOMMY. the safc leans out the motor. do not use the safc to control the fuel curve alone.

honestly, the best bet right now is with the sfmu, and larger injectors.

your on stock injectors right?

the craptech i've read on here that the craptech doesn't work well with large injectors.

the smfu is good. suieclipse is running that with high boost, and large injectors, and so is ner947. you can tune with the sfmu with large injectors, use that as the main fuel curve control, then use the safc to do some fine tuning on the idle with large injectors. you may also want to buy datalogging software to match the fuel curve as close to stock as possible, while seeing how the timing is. i don't know too much about this since way to advaced for my 5psi ass! :)

u guys know the reg chill factory (len's company) sells? is it any better than the craptech? its cheaper than the SFMU and len uses it on his beast neon so i'm just wondering (its considerably cheaper than the SFMU too...so that puts it even MORE in my ballpark)

I called them up today actually and talked to Vic, the guys that own the Chill Factory used to work for Hahn. The reg seems to be a really good deal. They fully warranty the unit for 90 days and if anything goes wrong, no questions asked, you get a full replacement. Plus, they support better than Hahn and they actually answer ur questions instead of trying to get u off the phone as fast as possible.

Your Chill Factory Billet FMU is on its way. You'll be very happy with it. Let us know when you plan to upgrade to larger injectors, and you can get the fuel tuning hardware to install.

I'm thinking about buying the Chill Factory unit. Does it come with the right disk to use with 30# injectors. If I do get this I'll probably install it at the same time I do my injectors.

will the chill factory FPR work with stock injectors and a walbro 255? thats the setup im considering, just wondering what you guys think?

Yep, you can get different sized disks from Chill Factory in their recalibration kit.

Can the Chill Factory FMU do 1:1?

What calibration disks/ratios are provided in the hardware kit?

No it can't go down to 1;1 ratio, but there are plenty of regulators that can do that for you that cost less.

The small disc/ring will do 2:1 to 4:1
The med. disc/ring will do 3:1 to 6:1
The large disc/ring will do 5:1 to 8:1
The standard FMU will do 7:1 to 11:1

The rate of gain within these ranges are still variable, which makes these extremely tuneable WITHOUT the use of a SAFC.

SAFC is a POS. It serves as a pritty blue box in our cars.

Them: "Hey man is that the SAFC you got there!@$#"
Me: "No, its the SAVCR."
