Well the other day I was looking arround the net for silicone elbows and alot of places do not sell to single customers. Or they did not have what I wanted in stock. So I called some local distributors and they wanted $75-$85 a piece! That is crazy so I looked into how they are made, the silicone is plyed with fiberglass in most cases. So I had some fiber glass and hardener laying arround so I figured I would wrap the stock HRC elbow with fiberglass. Well tonight I put on two layers and will have to wait till morning to see how they com out when they are hard. So do you guys think it will work? I think it should prevent the elbow from balooning out at higher boost. I am going to push them has high as my 440's will let me. I will write back in a couple of days to tell if it worked. If it does this can be a real cheap altenative. :thumbsup

By making it expand... I think thats a pretty good idea. I know you can buy elbows that have nylon on the outside, and I think that should do the trick, unless you are pushing insane amounts of boost. Try a Napa store and ask for radiator hose. Somethingl ike that

I don't know if I would try that as I don't think fiberglass will hold up to the heat, to the constant abuse of the engine flexing under load, or possible high boost pressures (if you are stage 2 or 3, boost spikes, etc). These silicone elbows need to flex.

I have used the website www.turbohoses.com and their products are of pretty decent quality. These hoses are made from two-ply fiberglass reinforced silicone are vary in price. The 90 degree elbows range in price from $49.00 to $126.00 based on inner diameter (2" to 4"). The most expensive one is a 4" Inner diameter and is three ply making up for the large pricetag. You may want to check them out.

i know there are 2 elbows that come with the HRC intercooler setup, i replaced the one that's right at the turbo with one from Extreme Motorsports.



mine looks like the blue one in the middle. i had to cut off some of the ends to get it to fit right, so i have a little bit of extra hose in case i need it for any reason

i guess no one has had problems with HRC's elbow below the fuse box because the temperatures there are significantly lower than at the other one. i think the issue is temperature, not pressure that ruins the one that they include with the kits. if it was pressure, then both would fail at about the same rate.

Au contraire...

I have had that elbow fail twice on me(15+ psi runs). Since the frequency of that elbow failing has been far less than what it was for the elbow right off the compressor snout, I've only replaced it with rubber elbows. The time IS coming where I'll change that one out with a silicone elbow though.

Oh yeah, I did pay the $60 for a silicone elbow off the compressor from Innovative Turbo. Damn thing has held up to 20 psi! :thumbsup

Good idea, you're on the right track I think.

The 1G 4g63 uses some real long rubber intercooler hose that has some sort of high-temp woven sleeve over it. Even though it's 13 years old, it still holds 15psi just fine.

Maybe you could pick up some stock 1G IC piping and use the braided sleeve?

I was thinking about getting a 90 degree mandrel bend and then connecting it with silicone couplers to the turbo outlet and the IC piping. Anybody see a reason that wouldn't work? Or should I just do drop the $60 on the silicone one. I just blew my star elbow the other day at 18 PSI, I have some plain RAD hose on there now and it is holding perfectly.

I've run 20+ psi on the hrc nitrile 90 deg elbow on the compressor multiple times with no problem. I've also been boosting 17 psi on it daily now for 4 months without an issue :shrug

Oh yeah, Matt, I've heard of that. As matter of fact, I got a definition for that sorta thing...ummm...oh yeah...it's called you LUCKY SHIT!! ;-) :+ hahah...

But yeah, before I splurged on the silicone elbow, I bet I replaced that nitrile thing no less than three or more times using nitrile elbows, and additional times using other things.

i know a lot of shops that even weld on the elbow to the compressor housing..this is what i plan on getting. i blew the star one real quick at 18 psi so i bought a 2" mandrel bend from Jegs w/ a huge 4" radius, its doign the job but not really desirable, i'm getting this one from roadrace real soon
