60530, searching for an aggressive camshaft...
Posted by ner947, Nov-11-03 12:06 PM
over the winter, i plan on purchasing an Accel DFI gen. VII (HRC's "old" "stage V" fuel system, DFI, 625's, 1:1 regulator). i've decided to do this for a couple of reasons:

1. a few weeks ago my car was broken into and the AFC was stolen, and i don't want to get another one. i also got a substantal amount of green from the insurance company. sounds like a good excuse to do a serious upgrade! lol...
2. i'll be able to have whatever redline i want
3. the gen. VII will pretty much replace the OEM ECU, enabling me to do whatever i want to injector/spark firing
4. no one on the board (that i know of) has the gen. VII, or has successfully made power above 7200 rpm's with a turbocharged 420a, it would be nice to actually do this

being able to circumvent the oem spark/fuel cut, i'll be able to rev my engine to pretty much whatever i want. i've heard of a lot of 4g63 guys who benefit from a 9000 rpm redline, with all of the supporting mods (aggressive cams, new lifters/rockers, springs, port maching, more head work, 20G, etc...) of course.

so, to make a long story short, i'm looking for a camshaft that will make NICE top end power. i could give a crap less about a nice idle or emissions. i have to get my car inspected/smogged this month, after that, it's another 2 years until i need to get smogged again (mass law) something tells me that the "turbo grind" crane's won't quite give me everything that i'm looking for all the way up to 9000 rpm's. i did some poking around on neons.org to see what their elite turbo people run with little success, but, i read one thread saying that the crane 18's wouldn't be good for a turbo application because of excessive overlap...? can this be eliminated with a decent set of cam gears?

what are the stage IV+ people on here using? dino? brad? chris? etc...?

thanks in advance.

9k?! say hello to new crank land! Pickup the 2.2 from FTY, then run ^ you you will be one sick bastard. :thumbsup I am running crane 14's which are pritty mild. If your not going to be driving this thing on the street do a super agressive custom grind.

Whats the point in revving to 9k anyway? Hahn is running 10.80's with stock computer and redline. Just copy thier set-up and you will be one sick bastard!

hahn is also spraying his motor with a 150 shot. Other then that his car runs low 12's.

HRC's philosophy is a little different than mine. they are trying to do all they can without touching the head. they can afford this because Mr. Hahn Jr. is also a much better driver than me and they're willing to use nitrous oxide.

my story, is a little different. i can't launch for crap (2.3 seconds is my best 60' time, with street tires obviously) and i'm not willing to use nitrous oxide - yet. maybe summer 2004 when i get, you guessed it, some more time and money.

anyways, i did a little research with the crower stage 3 cams. they look pretty nice, but my original estimate of having a 9000 rpm redline would have been slightly overkill. shifting somewhere between 8000 and 8300 ish would be ideal for those camshafts and the right tuning. having a 9000 rpm redline would probably also require balancing the crap out of my current crank, or getting an entire new engine which i am not willing to do. i want to stick with 2.0 liters. i feel as if i can get away with 8300 ish rpm's with my current hardware.

Because if you can make the same amount of torque at 7000-9000 rpm as you can at 5000-7000 rpm....you'll be making ~30% more horsepower. A change like that would push Hahn's 600hp car to 750 or 800hp.

Torque is important, but so is HP when you gear it right.

Don't trust the specs for the stage 3 on crower's website. The ones for stage 1 and 2 are wrong so stage 3 is probably off. Call them to find out the actual specs.
