60444, Injector Popped Off
Posted by Eclipse2NR, Nov-10-03 07:47 AM
Okay, the title was just a hook. As well all know, an injector can't really "pop off". Here's the story. I smelled gas from my interior vents, a good indication of a fuel leak. I knew this because a few weeks ago I had a small leak from the outlet on my fuel rail. This time, I was having a hard time finding the source of the leak, so I started the car and looked at the fuel rail. Low and behold, there is a fine mist of fuel shooting everywhere. Upon closer examination, I realized that the injector has unseated from the fuel rail. By this, I mean the top injector o-ring has come out of the rail. Now, whether the rail moved, or the injector had too much room to move, is hard to say. It is an aftermarket fuel rail, but it feels pretty sturdy on it's mounts. I can't really move it with my hand. I am not really asking any questions, I just thought I would share this with you. Looks like I get to pull the upper manifold and play with more fuel crap. What a pain in my ass.

Here are some pictures. (note, I just checked and it looks like the server is down, hopefully it will be working again by the time I get this posted)

You can clearly see the o-ring is out of the rail, allowing a big fuel leak. I don't have the tools I need here to fix this, nor do I feel like tearing apart my intake in the middle of a apartment complex parking lot, so I think I will wait until I move into my new house to fix this. We'll have to see. Any suggestions?

Well I would not wait, fuel leaks can be dangerous. You don't have to take the mani off to fix that either. All you have to do is pull the coil pack and maybe the throttle cable and you can reach what you need to. You should be able to push the rail back down onto the injector. Is there any type of clip in system like on the stock rail to keep those things in there?

I agree you dont want fuel leaking into your eng. bay. I replaced my injectors the other day and I did not remove the upper intake. Do you have thse clips on the inj. cause with those it would pretty hard for an inj. to fall out of the rail. But again I would fix it now and not wait.

Well I didn't mean I was going to drive the car with it leaking fuel. By the way, I did manage to stop the leak temporarily, by moving the injector around. It looks like it only leaks when the injector is being "pushed" on, cause I had a hard time getting it to leak again. There are no clips on this rail to help hold the injectors. I think the problem is the brackets that motofool sent me. It looks like the fuel rail is just too far from the injector tip, because it's fully seated into the manifold. I can't really move the rail by hand, so I guess I will have to take the rail off and work on some new brackets. I do like this rail though, its CNC billet aluminum and has 6AN inlet/outlet and a fuel pressure gauge port on the top.

Sorry I thought you meant you would have to drive it like that. Is there anyway you can rig up your old clips to this new rail?

Yup. motofool sent me some brackets he made from aluminum, but I don't think the mounting holes are in the right places.

Never done a belt in my life. It has to be easier than a turbo kit.

the accessory belts are easy... I've shredded a few of them. Just gotta move the tensioner, then your money :)
