Tonight something sort of weird happened. I was on my way back from a movie and it was freezing out so temp may have had something to do with it. I was driving normally and to pick up speed I brought it up to 0 vacuum and just as I was entering boost I got that horrible hesitation, the same type I felt before I got the missing link.

I let off the throttle and tested it again by easing into boost and nothing happened. It was fine and car runs normally. I'm just wondering if maybe it was light detonation from being so cold out and maybe I had a lean fuel mixture or maybe I misfired for some reason. I don't really know the difference between the two as far as feeling goes. I didn't hear anything so I doubt it was detonation but I'm wondering why I'd be misfiring.

Plugs aren't very old and they're the one range colder NGKs. The wires were changed during my 63k checkup and I only have 71k on the car now.

I was mainly just wondering how to tell between the hesitation of detonation and misfiring and what you guys think it was this time. Thanks:bowdown

probably fuel cut.

i was experiencing that last week (got cel for map sensor blah blah). it was bad too. anytime above 1 psi. i cleaned the ml, ok for a day, then cel. cleared the code and its been gone so :shrug embarrasing going to full boost and full cut.

drive with the windows down, radio off, and go into boost again. if it starts to hesitate when you go into boost, probably fuel cut imo

Came home and entered boost just fine. Weird. Anyway, thanks for the info as usual! :thumbsup

Yeah, the ML may have just stuck open because of the cold. Its made out of aluminum, which may contract just enough to make the ML stick a bit, esp if your ML is getting dirty. It was prob just fuel cut. You cant really feel detonation, its not like a misfire, or bucking, its all in how the motor sounds. Detonation is like a metalic rattling, bearings-in a-can type sound..

Is it loud enough to hear with windows up and the radio on? Or would the dangerous amount of detonation at least be heard over them?

detonation sounds like a card is in your tire :nono just let off the gas if something doesnt feel right. use your instincts, that'll usually save your ass on a number of different levels.

as to running leank when you're cold, the stock ECU purposely makes your car run rich to get it to operating temperature faster, keeps the injectors open longer. so running lean when you are cold is pretty rare imo

check your plugs too, they may be fouled out. check the gap while they are out. .3-.35

I get this hesitation during the transition into boost sometimes too. It's always running rich when it happens, its kinda funny actually cuz the car bucks and acts all bitchy for a second. Only happens when I'm driving calmly.

If I romp and go into boost, there's no problems. Probably just the mechanical nature of the ML.

Exactly. It's when the car was still real cold and my A/F was pinned in rich to warm her up. Since I'm already running a tad richer than HRC specs I'm wondering if maybe that's got something to do with it. Plugs aren't very old at all so they should still be good. I'll check them when I get a chance. This was after the car was sitting in the freezing cold for a few hours. I usually have it in the garage.
