60269, AEM + turbo? Posted by 96rs-t, Nov-06-03 07:21 PM
i was just wondering: i put a half of the AEM CAI in replacement of the stock HRC pipe and filter, from the turbo so that i can get the nice cold air from the bottom , and i got that nice CAI sound, and i took it for a spin, and i dont know if its all in my head, but it felt as if i gained a little hp, could this be or am i just nutz and should take it off and put back the original??:shrug

if your gonna use the aem (i think it hangs down pretty low? never had one) id watch out for the water. ive heard of people messing up their shit using that. but then again.... never had one, so what do i know.

I think james man has a CAI on his too? I know one other member does also. What I hear is that it takes up some spool time...I have not done it myself, I plan to, but havnt. So I cant give you my opinion. they did mention that they also thoguht it was a bit better, but also could have been in their head...
someone try this on unbiased butt dynos.;-)

I used regular tubing to make my cai, but I used 3 inch tubing which is way fatter than the 2.5 inch tube that connects to the turbo on the hrc kit. The spool up was slower when I used 2.5 inch pipe so i swithced to the 3 inch and have no noticable increase in lag time. What i do know is that the intake temperatures are now on average 15-20 degrees lower. I have even seen instances where the intake temperature was 30 degrees lower than before. This was all logged on my pocketlogger.

be careful with CAI.... = hydrolock

There's no point. Compressing air creates heat. Bringing in ambient air still means hot air from the turbo. Just get a better fmic and be done with it.

at the ammount of boost you are going to be running I seriously doubt it will do you any good.

60285, RE: AEM + turbo? Posted by siueclipse, Nov-07-03 07:49 AM
I disagree. Colder air is still colder air. example: if you compress air which is at 50 degrees.. then it goes up to say 80 degrees.. then lets say you compress colder air.. what is going to happen? granted it will still heat up but it wont be as hot as before simply because the source is cooler to start with.
I have my CAI on my s20g.. 3" piping. I noticed a hella difference. Quicker throttle response and gained 8whp on the dyno with it.
you aren't just creating a cold air.. if you do it right, you are creating ram air at the same time.
i think its a definet plus. there is a video of mine in www.gsturbo.com/james/eclipse

you can always do a test.
have a buddy install or take off the cai. you where a blind fold when in the car and ear plugs. then do 10 trials with random 50/50 chance that the cai will be on the car or not.

well, i still have it on, and drove it to work today, and i ran it at WOT and i guess its not in my head, cuz it does feel better, sounds nice too! maybe i do need to test it though. thanks for the input! i wanna take it to the track as my test! Hamelth

or you could take it to a dyno, do runs with the hood closed with that big azz fan on the cai. You can datalog the the IAT also hehe.

from what i have heard the CAI on a turbo makes a noticable diff. but with a turbo the gains u are making are almost negligable and the risk of ingesting water theres no point

well, i have the bypass valve, so i can always put that on, but its about to rain over here, so i think i'll just take it off. by the way, does anyone know if he Cali speedway does drag races on sat, or is it just a summer thing?? have not been there in a while. i'd like to test this at the track

The turbo is hot as hell and all your air is going through it. The air is going to reach just about the same temp no matter what, and that colder air coming in is no match for the heat of the turbo. The intercooler is the final word in intake temp.

Um... having ridden in James' car I can say you'll need more than earplugs.
Several heavy doses of Morphine might do the trick. :bowdown
Anyways, if nothing else, his intake temps are definitely lower and it sounds nicer. If you already have the bigee HRC FMIC, why not?

lol...^
anyways, yeah there is some real results. So I guess its worth a shot, Hey if you have some pipe laying around why not?
I agree with Dino's statement though, A good FMIC should do the job just as good.
Man, Im still in love with the HRC FMIC.

There is NOWAY i would put a by-pass valve on the compressor side of my turbo. can you imagine the POS falling apart an getting sucked into your compressor impeller? that would not be a good mix. i think what dyno is saying, is that the 10-15 degree colder air you get with the CAI, provides little to no gain when they are both getting heated up tremendously during compression. ill side with IC efficiency.

i cant see how a CAI on a turbo would make a difference...its still getting compressed. Either get a more efficient intercooler or find a way to chill the air past the IC to the TB.

60490, RE: AEM + turbo? Posted by siueclipse, Nov-10-03 05:52 PM
i say... you disbelivers need to make one and find out for yourself.. only a handful of people have done it and wee have said it makes a difference.
do what you will. we know it helps.

^^^ Hint: The IAT sensor he's datalogging is AFTER the compressor AND FMIC.

Can you save that graph, post it and then make another with just the regular intake pipe to the turbo? I wanna see it. Call me the doubting thomas.

you know... for $25 bux you guys can find out for yourself. just buy a cheap $25 intake for our cars as NA and hook itup. thats what i did.

60510, RE: AEM + turbo? Posted by DarkOne, Nov-11-03 07:35 AM
I still do not agree that the gains are worth it vs. a better performing IC. However, i would like to do something along those lines just to get my filter in a better place - it currently rubs the heater hoses and i dislike this. Perhaps i'll try it, like it, then you can say "I told you so," and hurt my pride.

60511, RE: AEM + turbo? Posted by Uberingram, Nov-11-03 07:59 AM
Ya see, here is my thing.
Person gets mod Person gets expectations for mod (you cant deny it) Person installs mod Person drives car with said mod Person has expections on gains Person 'feels' gains per expectations
Hell, I put in new spark plugs and expect my butt dyno to go "holeeeeeeee shit".
I'm just asking someone with access to a logger and 2GNT to post of differences.
Edit: and besides...I don't have 25 dollars :P

60520, RE: AEM + turbo? Posted by redeclipset, Nov-11-03 09:25 AM
colder air is colder air. Even though the air goes through the intercooler it's not even close to normal temps. The engine bay is very hot expecially with the turbo. The only problem with this is that it COULD get water and it MIGHT have a lil lag. Why doesn't everyone just try the idea. It seems that the ones that have it are saying that it makes a noticable difference and the ones that don't have one say it's not worth it. It seems like a good idea to me I plan to have a cai once i finish up with my turbo kit.

60578, RE: AEM + turbo? Posted by Semperboost, Nov-12-03 08:02 AM
Well in my opinion it is a waste of time cuz the colder the air getting compressed, the slower it will move through the piping, hence lag. BUT this might be offset by the colder, denser air being ingested by the engine. Just as exhuast temperature should be hot enough to keep the gas flowing fast, but not too cool to slow it down. It would be advisable on a car with no intercooler. Added to that you might get some BOV flutter. Alvin
