Is it better to run both valve cover vents to a catch can or just one and leave the pcm valve inline running to the intake mani? BTW i'm refering to turboed cars.

I have my PCV valve fully sealed and vent the other line on the VC to atmosphere (with a catch can to grab oil). That eliminates the possiblilty of pressurizing the VC with boost (in case of failed PCV valve). That also lets the nasty vapors in the VC vent straight up to the ozone layer. With winter coming, I try to contribute to global warming all I can.

I ran both outlets of the VC to the catch can. I then used the outlet in the intake for a dedicated bov source. This made for a very fast reacting bov when I got off the throttle.
Just keep the catch can filter clean and the can drained, otherwise the pressure will have no place to go except out your oil dipstick(if your lucky).

ditto. both lines go to my catch can and the port in the intake manifold is sealed off.

Yep, same here. :thumbsup

Hye guys.. I am totally lost here. What is a catch can...and what is it for?
As you guys might know...I just turboed my car...and I dont konw which line has to unplug???
OK, for the intake side, I make the hose coming off the top of the valve cover to the breather filter. Good?
Now, what you guys talking about the PCV valve?? for what? That's the second hose sticking out of the top of the valve cover right? to the PCV valve to the intake manifold..>I have to take that off too? SO no more PCV valve?
then should I make both of the hose off the valve cover to the breather filter?
Thanks. Gil

thanks for the replys guys
a catch can is used to catch oil that is blown out the breather tubes in the valve cover.

so if you guys are running catch cans or can, how often do you have to empty them? dont they need a vacuum source? now im new as you guys notice but one of the few who turbod there 7afe (i drive a toyota celica see link for pics and dyno graph...) im having one hell of a time with the pvc system and im looking for some of your expertice. this is bascally the only thing holding me back from saying im complete, which we never really are but the R&D of my turbo would be.
also on my link (to 6gc profiles) you can see what i have done to my vacuum lines for the time being. it has worked fine for a couple weeks actually than went to shit.. its just puking oil out making a mess. thanks :bowdown

Hi...what is it? do I HAVE to remove my PCV valve??? From the intake Manifold? Thanks.

Here's a pic of the catch can that RRE sells...

If you only have a small breather filter coming off the valve cover and you're turbo, you'll probably end up with oil all over your engine bay. A catch can just allows the oil to drain without making a mess. I usually empty mine whenever I do an oil change.
The hose going from the back of your valve cover to the intake manifold houses the PCV valve. The PCV valve is actually the little hard plastic piece inline on that hose. If that fails while you're boosting (which we have seen happen), you could create too much crankcase pressure and break things. Removing that PCV valve and running that hose to the catch can is good insurance against that.

I dont run a catch can and have been running just fine for months. No oil or anything. Are you sure you guys arent being paranoid?

How much oil? If it's large amounts, i'd say check your compression and make sure you haven't hurt the bottom end. a teaspoon full here or there isn't anything to worry about, but a half quart would make me start looing for the compression tester.

well now reading i may bave a broken pvc.. but it still clicks which mean its working correct? i am trying to reroute the lines todad into a moroso can i purchased today (part number 85465 cost 73.30)... anyways my compression i suspect to be healthy seeing i get vacuum reading from 20 idle and 24-26 when im on the gas driving. my motor has well under 5000miles its whole life. (found it in a yard, the OD read 3k, still had original oil filter and plugs.) it wasnt dumping any oil at all than one day it has a little and sense then it just does it more and more.. i dont have the best of luck.

Take it off and blow through it. the PCV is just a one-way check valve. if air goes through both ways, it's bad.
If you'd rathe rnot worry about it, take the whole pcv valve and tube out, cap the port on the intake manifold, and run both outlets on the valvecover to a catchcan and call it a day.

would it be ok to take the 2 into a y connector than into the can?
how much smoke should come from the can? i just hook it up, all ports blocked except the pvc, which i did the blow into test, its working, but to 2on on what you said, just the one doesnt seem to release enough, also going around my block like this the car didnt want to go into boost. it sat at 0 or 1 psi. nothing came into the can so i guess that is good. but im afraid the crankpressure was to hi and thats why boost isnt happening.

Ok guys! I was running like most of you for a while. PCV outlet to the air filter to get a little bit of vac and a catch can on the breather (inlet). I decided it was not working properly, I wasn't getting enough vac to vent the crankcase. I hooked the pcv back up to the intake, and since my bov signal was on there I T'ed off the break booster line for my bov. Then i connected the catch can to my breather. I really think the motor is running better now that the crankcase is vented properly. I would not recommend ANYONE disconnect the vac from the pcv outlet. more vacume in the case is going to vent better and help the rings seal properly. If anything I would suggest finding a better check valve to replace the PCV, and if you do let me know because I can't find anything!
Don't remove your pcv system!!! :nono :nono :nono

OK... Let me make this clear. I am turbed...and I boost at 5PSI right now.
So I will have to remove BOTH hoses off the valve cover to the Intake Manifold, and Seal the intake manifold side up.
Then I route BOTH valve cover hose to Y connection to a: 1) Breather Filter (good enough?) 2) Catch Can (if it use to catch oil, won't our car out of oil eventually?) 3) Can we seal the Valve Cover also? (what's the point of the two holes of the Valve Cover for anyway?
Thanks guys. Now that I read all the above post, it seems like this hose thing is VERY IMPORTANT for a turboed car.... SO I have to have this clear. Gil

gil.. the PCV stands for positive crankcase valve, it is normal to have crankcase pressure. you DO NOT want to plug thoes holes up, the crank needs to let the perssure out, and in some cases lets it in. ----------------------- i just spent like 2hours reading on pcv systems and crankcae venting.. a link to a good explnation is www.autoshop101.com/forms/h63.pdf
i luckly found it to be toyota based but the mojority of PCV systems have the same idea, get the positve pressure and HC (hydrocarbons) out. ---------------------- some sites noted that they also are a safey, ie backfires could cause a fire? i think (for my application) i need to leave the PCV in and just clean the thing for 20min in gas. leave the actual PCV valve like factory. and block the breather line from intake manifold and run the other end from the valve cover to the catch can. i hope my troubles are just a dirty PCV.

OK, so should I unhook both and connect both to a catch can? Or just the breather Filter is fine for one? or both needed? THanks.
