Ok I have a friend who wants to build an datalogger. It would read up to 8 parameters at once. He wants to know what you want to see....
So have at it guys. Once he is done with it, it would be plug and play for obd2. 1/2 din sized. Now it would ONLY be a data logger, not a super afc type device, where you could modify the engine loads ect ect...
anyway lets have it....what would you like to see..

bump bump guys, come on now I know all of ya want an affordable datalogger....

the main issue i have with my obd-2.com datalogger is that the update rate blows. anything more than 2 parameters at once and the individual FPS is awful. i'd settle (and buy) something that supported timing advance, IAT, RPM, and ECT all at the same time with decent (better than 4 FPS in each at the same time) FPS.

I don't know if our ECU monitors distance travled but I think an ET calculator would be pretty sweet.

It well help if it could monitor fuel trim, intake temp., coolant temp., 02 sensor and ignition timing...

I want STFT, LTFT, o2, advance, rpm, all simultaneously logged so I can open them later on a laptop or something. 20 samples per second would be nice too, but impossible I think.

Also, if you could make a peak/warn system for coolant, rpm, intake air, that would be awesome too, just a dummy light or buzzer would be fine.

Would pay $100-200 for something like this, depending on the features offered. Bonus to the guy that builds it because it will work on all imports.

I can attest to the pocketloggers worth. On my RS I can get a solid 16 samples a second and that was without byte timing, just plugged it right in. It clears and reads CELS and reads all of the stuff you guys mentioned. Awesome product.

Edit: 16-17 samples per second is about the max from our ECU I think.

I have never been able to get better than 15-16 samples. I dont think our ECU sends at a higher rate. at least I have never been able to get anything higher than that and I have played with all the byte sampling rates, baud speeds etc. I think that the dataloggers that are out there now are pretty comprehensive, so I dont know what your friend could improve on much.

That's the limitation of OBD-II, not necesarrily the logger.

it should take info from the ECU such as stft,ltft,advance,intake temp. And read from external sensors, boost, egt, and wideband O2. That would be the killer logger! :thumbsup

ideally i think you would want a logging program that incorapted all aspects you would need for tuning, plus maybe a built in g sensor or something to log how hard you slammed turns (perfect for those late night canyon runs)

all the standard features of a datalogger +:

1.) built in EGT
2.) boost
3.) oil pressure/temp
4.) fuel pressure
5.) short term and long term fuel maps obviously
6.) logging of switches such as fuel pump relay/bnoost activated switch, etc. (when active and not)

Joshie you should buy a greddy e-manage. It does everything you want, he is just talking about a data logger. You cant have egt temp because our computer dont have a f*cking clue what it is, hence why we have egt gauges. If it could read external sources it would be much more then a datalogger. Emanage and a few others do that.

Sounds like you guys have the inputs down. I would like it to have a kick ass price and a obd2-pc cable, so I can run it from a laptop.

So what exactly is he making? Is he just writing the software, or is he using a palm, and a obd2 cable? Laptop? I use the pocketlogger, and its great. It has more peramiters than i even use. But, if its limited to 8:

STFT
LTFT
Ignition timing
Coolant temp
o2 sensor voltage
Map sensor values
TPS sensor values
RPM

I paid around 175 or so for the pocketlogger software and cable. If you can make it cheaper than that, then go for it. IMO, its worth and value for tuning is *worth* much more than that...

nick if you get the new coming up knockbox fronm pocketlogger it has inputs for an EGT, i know our cars dont have them stock. it would come with a probe.

side question: would putting grease all over a drill bit prevent metal shavings from getting in the exhaust? i heard this somewhere but not sure if its true. its like silicon grease or something, so you dont have to remove the manifold and all that

Yes people do this with the egt's and they leave the car running also.

Ok he works for a company that MAKES the sensor reading tools. So what ever the max rate to read is he can read it. So it would be like 1/2 the size of your cd player. Get the idea here. You could mount it almost anywhere. Im not sure how much he will be charging for this but I'm sure it will be worth the $. Im going to send him the link here and let him read over your suggestions. Rember it would only be able to read what the ECU can read. So things like boost and egt would not be possible due to our cars never came with those sensors. Anyway it will be a bit for him to get this into development. Right now it is at the 'hey i got an idea and i have the means to to it' stage.

STFT is short term fuel trim and LTFT is long term fuel trim.

a MUST on this logger would be a knock count from the ECU and definitely o2, intake air temp, timing, stft, ltft, rpm and a must would be to make it recordable and interface with a palm or PC so that you can download your data and check it out under different cirumstances. it's cool as hell when you see all the stuff coming out on a screen while you drive, but the real breakthroughs come when you're back in the garage and everything has slowed back down.
