59820, full turbo exhaust, what's the most quiet?
Posted by CrashedMax, Oct-30-03 03:11 PM
I'm going to be buying a 2.5" downpipe in the next month or so and I already have a 3" Random Tech Racing Cat for my previous car. Can I run 2.5" piping, then have the 3" cat, then 2.5" piping after that? Also what is the most stock sounding exhaust? I have the GST exhaust on now but will add a muffler when I get my exhaust system made, but I want it to sound relatively the same as it does now. Any suggestions? And I will ::gasp:: sacrifice performance for sound. (I work where I sometimes have to meet with clients and I don't want some loud ass exhaust tone when I drive up)

2.5 will not be loud but you won't get the performance as 3 incher cat back

I thought how loud it your exhaust is, is mainly determined by the muffler you have. Yeah a 2.5" will be quieter with the same muffler than a 3". But you can have a 3" exhaust with a quiet muffler, and a 2.5" that's louder with a fart can on the end. I'm trying to find a muffler that will get me the sound I'm looking for...nice and quiet. Now by quiet I mean how loud it is, I would still prefer a deep tone over some high ricey tone.

hmm well i am in the same boat as you. i want performance gains but don't want to go deaf. i was researching this a few weeks ago and i guess the louder the muffler, the more flow since there are less sound deflectors. i wanted to go for example, with a 3 in exhaust and a gst muffler, but the flow is pretty bottle necking in the muffler and hence, no gains.

i guess interms of exhaust options, i was thinking of maybe the greddy evo since the mojority of people who have gone with that say its the quitest of the aftermarket exhaust out there. its still loud and deep than the gst muffler but you'll get gains a ton of gains.

i was also thinking of a tanabe racing medalion with the silencer. you may have to try to find a 2gnter with a turbo in your area or neon with a turbo to find and compare noises (thats what i plan anyway).

what ever exhaust you get, YOU WILL NOT SOUND LIKE A LAWNMOWER cause eclipses never have the honda sound.

whoa triple post!

Anyways, what is a "glass pack". I've read on some searches I ran about them. It sounds like they quiet down the muffler. Anyone ever run one and how did it change the sound?

I ran a purple horney muffler (resonator) from Howells and it TOTALLY eliminated any resonance inside the cab. it also smoothed out the exhaust and lowered the tone. I however didn't notice it making my exhaust any less loud though. I'm sure that a glasspack would remove some of the volume because it is technically a muffler.

i have the greddy street performance catback and sometimes at stoplights i have to look at my tach to see if my car is even still running. it's one of the quietest exhaust systems out there. and it has a low tone and sounds awesome i get lots of compliments on it

You'll never get the Honda ricey sound with a turbo guys. The riceness of a Honda is caused by 3 things. 1. Low displacement 2. High revs 3. Cheap exhaust.

Think of it like this, stick your lips on a trumped and blow...what sound comes out?

NA cars also have exhaust pulses comming through the system which cause the raspiness. With a turbo your turbine is a restriction in that exhaust and evens everything out.

I would say if you got a 3" exhaust with a cat, resonator (glass pack), and a good muffler you'll be fine.

2.5" turboback, 3" cat is fine, 18-24" cherry bomb/glasspack, Magnaflow muffler will be quiet as stock (at idle anyways).

My car used to be one of the loudest cars around with stock piping and just a Nakayama muffler. After the turbo kit, I can't even hear the exahust anymore. Well, it probably has to do with most of the exhaust leaking out before the muffler, I don't think much even makes it to the muffler :)
