59707, boosting problems Posted by siueclipse, Oct-29-03 03:20 AM
Well... last night I drove to st louis, (smoked an rsx-s, hehe).. anyway.. on the way home i noticed i wasn't making boost. I am making maybe 2 or 3 pounds of boost and thats it.
This morning I check my turbo, its fine, normal play for a 20g, no scrapes.. looks fine.. i check a few of the boots for the IC piping, they looking fine. Checked the bov to see if it was leaking.. It doesn't sound or feel like its leaking, but when you rev it.. the amount of air that comes out is no where near what it used to be. I have 2 more IC boots to check, but i have to take the bumper off for that.
My question is.. If all the boots are fine, could it be a problem with the turbo? The 20g is internally wastegated. Can a turbo just stop making boost?
Any other suggestions?
Thanx James

maybe the boost controller isnt working? maybe try sticking the line from the compressor housing to the wastegate, and i guess thats a 9# spring? i dunno.

if the boost controller wasn't working, then the wastegate would at least do 5lbs of boost. the wastegate is set for 5lbs.. actually it goes to 7

Is your wastegate flapper stuck open? I have heard of people having thiers sick open before.

If this is the case, you could hit only 2 or 3 psi because there is a pressure loss through the IC, even if your wastegate is set for 5...but if I had to guess you problem just have a coupling blown.

well.. i checked the boost controller by taking it out of the loop. still no boost. actually less than before.
i check all the IC piping and boots. No problems. I took off the turbo outlet IC pip and massive amounts of air is coming out. I dont think the turbo has a problem.
Im starting to lean to the BOV. It doesn't leak when reving but maybe under load its leaking. Im unsure. Ive had a funny feeling with the BOV over the last month. Maybe its shot.

You would be surpised what can put a hole in an intercooler. Even a rock thrown from another car can do it. Happend to a buddy of mine. The big thing is check those boots under the bumper, but usually if you have blown off a boot completely the car wont idle well either.

ill check the IC tonight, ive had boots come off before, the car idles just fine. maybe with a 4g63 it wont idle correctly but with a 420a, it will idle fine.

You have a point. I have both and I've only had the pipes come off on my GSX.

james, what kind of bov do you have? if its adjustable, try setting it at the tightest it will go. i have the turbo xs rfl-h and i have it tighted down all the way, to make sure it dosent leak.

Get a pcv pipe and cap drill a hole in the cap and insert a tire valve. Put it on the turbo inlet and put about 16-20 LBS of pressure in the system, then lister for the leak.

yeah. i just did the leak test. there are none.
im running a greddy type s bov.
im starting to get frustrated.

Did you check the wastegate actuator arm (if internally gated)? Mine lost it's little E-clip and the arm fell off the lever, and made like 2 psi of boost.

if you can't hear any boost leaks I would lean toward the westgate being stuck open.

ding ding ding.. we have a winner.. i can't believe all the trouble i went through just to find out it was that stupid pin that came off the actuator arm.

Glad to be of help. That happened to me after like the 3rd day of having the turbo kit. I bought some more clips, put the arm back on. The clips didn't fit, and now I can't even get the arm back off... hehe.
