runnin around on 2gnt's? is there a size/ mounting issue?

Just so you will stop bumping this. I don't know why they choose a side to side flow vs. a top to bottom flow. If you want maximum efficiency, then top to bottom is a great choice. I would rather sacrafice a little efficiency for little more cooling if the intake air. I did elect to go with a smaller core and larger custom endtanks that do not disturb the airflow. Plus a buddy of mine make them at a reasonable price and they fit a 97-99 2G bumper rather well.

Here a some pics...rather large though.

The front bumper is rather dirty, because the car has been sitting for quite some time now. I am also getting an aluminum L-bracket welded onto the bottom of the intercooler core. It will allow the bottom of the opening to be attached to this L-bracket and not look warped and at high speeds it will keep it from allowing air to go below the core. I have some cuts in the bumper left from when the starion was in there. This new bracket will cover this up.

Now leave us alone about what flows better. You can check the NABR tech archives for more discussion about this. I almost went with a RRE Top/bottom flow(6x18 core) with HKS endtanks, but like my current setup better. And the polished endtanks are BLING BLING!

WTF???:wary are you trying to sound like an ass? Cause you are! or are you trying to sound like your kidding?
1 bump? Flow? :shrug
Did i miss something?

Just a bit of sarcasm with a pretty decent reply:thumbsup

BTW: if I wanted to sound like an ass you would definately not wonder if I was or not. Sorry, does that make me sound like an ass again. :shrug

I was mostly making fun at your bump. Like people didn't see it the first time:rolleyes

OH and one more thing. I spend 15 minutes resizing pics that I had on my digital and then uploading them just for you my friend.

No worries then, just couldnt tell. all is:thumbsup .
by the way, you got robbed on your 15min, pics didnt work...;(
would still love to see them. :-)

just click the link. It opens fine.

If you are on a government workstation or somewhere that has a firewall and limits pics, then you might be out of luck for now.

do i have to be a member or something, cause all i get is the main page for villagephoto, with a red X box and "no title" above the box.

hmm well I would thing the top to bottom ones are more expensive because you have more tubes but you endtank is also gonna be much huger than b4. ahhh I'm just spewing crap now :P

more surface area to cool with a side to side... it's all in the engineering of the IC

God damned Norton firewall, i can see them now!!

Okay, say you have a FMIC that just the core fills up the stock front opening on a 97, the core being not any higher or lower or wider than the opening. Now, which one will cool more, be more efficient, and have less pressure drop? End tanks or top/bottom tanks?

Looking in Maximum boost, it says that given the same frontal surface area, the top/bottom tank FMIC has a greater internal flow and therefore lower pressure loss.

EDIT: okay i see now, they both will be the same as far as efficancy, just less pressure drop with the top/bottom...

The side/side will most likely cool the air down more due to air being in the core longer.

If the endtanks are setup properly and the air does not change directions like a top/bottom core with the endtanks routing the air so it makes a 90 degree bend(inside the endtank-entering the core), then pressure drop might be equal. The differnce might just be .5 psi pressure drop vs. 10 degree cooler air.

BTW: my core and endtanks are approx. 2 inches above the top opening in my bumper. It is just covered by the bumper. The core alone is 18x8 inches. The deal my buddy gets is limited to this size core. If this was not an option, I would have chosen a 20x10 core for my setup. We just made the endtanks larger so they would absorbe some heat as well. In the end it turned pretty darn good IMHO.

remember this the more passes it has to make the greater the pressure drop....

what do you mean by passes?
58961, RE: why are there not more FMIC with Top/bottom tanks...

If you have the inlet and outlet in the same endtank the air has to make two passes throught the core.

Okay, that makes sense. Thats why im looking at a top/bottom config. so both in and out are on the same side without having to make 2 passes. plus it seems that by not having the equivelent of a 180 deg. bend (as well as 1 or 2 others) to get from the turbo to the IC or to the intake would help out as well. Its probably all 6 of one or 1/2 dozen the other, huh?

Couple of concepts I would like to add to the convo:

Corky Bell's assertion that top to bottom flow is more effective due to lower pressure drop...true, but only if the side to side to side flow core being compared to has excessive pressure drop. An important note here is that 'efficiency' is NOT expressed in pressure drop, but in the heat transfer capability of the core. I find that in most top-to-bottom flow cores, the heat transfer capabilty can be limited by the short flow path through the intercooler.

Not all side-to-side designs with inlet / outlet on same side have a 'split core' where the airlow makes a 'dual pass' through the intercooler. For instance, our product does not...ours uses an air passage incorporated into the intercooler case to bring air from the inlet to the other side of the core, and the air makes only one pass through the 9 x 3.5 core face, traveling 24" through the core length. The core itself is designed internally so that pressure drop is less than 1 PSI at up to about 550 HP of airflow. Pressure drop remains acceptable (less than 2 PSI) all the way to 700 HP!

Side to side flows package better, as the limiting dimension is typically height...we have more room for the FMIC tanks on the left and right ends than at the top and bottom, so we can cram more core volume in with the side to side approach.

It's a matter of personal opinion, but I also prefer the look of side-to-side. Currently, most all sport-compact vehicle styling is using horizontal 'slats' and stying cues on the front ends...vertical FMIC bars just don't have the same 'eye appeal'.

Boost It!
BH
