58725, How to break in certain items like...
Posted by TXTurboGS, Oct-16-03 12:18 PM
I've always heard different way of breaking in a new engine, clutch, LSD, etc. I'm confused here. I have a new engine, a new clutch and a new Quaiffe TBD. How the hell do I break in each item?

Should I boost the engine right away> Or should I keep it below 3.5k RPM then raise it after the first 500 miles? Please help

Good question! Let me tell you about my recent experience... i started off boosting at 10psi... I guess i was a little hard on her... we did go above 4000rpm a few times and after 500miles it was all out.... this was probably my biggest mistake because now im dealing with all sorts of problems... im having to tear my motor back down again.... as i did a compression check and #1 is at 60 and #2 is at 150 along with the others.

My best advice for you is to do the following:

Do not go above 4000RPM
Do not let it sit at idle for the first 25miles
Do not go above 70mph
very the speed
very the rpm
do not go up steap hills or put heavy load on the motor.
do not use synthetic for the first 2000miles...

this was advice i should have taken.

Eclipsekaiser and I *tried* to do a scientific breakin-approach investigation. It failed to be scientific, because that bastid installed the better JE rings, and I had Totalseals. x( But anyways, according to Totalseal, mine should have higher compression.

I broke mine in HARD, just went out and beat on it within limits. Redlined (ATX) twice the first night.
Kaiser babied his, didn't take it over 4000rpm, etc.

After breakin, I had something like 20psi LOWER compression on all 4 cylinders than him. I'd say either a gentle breakin is better, or JE rings are better than Totalseals when used on a JE piston.

well as far as the lsd we broke in my friends one on his 240sx by driving in a figure 8 for 30 mins which was recommended by the instruction manual

and it has been over a year and his lsd is still in top shape

as far as the engine theres alot of different opinions on here i just rebuilt mine and the second i tuned the fuel and ignition out i punched her at 12psi but didnt redline it. i say treat it like how your gonna run it and imo it seats the rings better, but im a former v8 owner and i live by it so hey just get some feedback on here and you decide

You don't break-in a Quaife. Ther's nothing to seat - it's an ATB.

I know that somewhere I read that I have to break in the Quaife. Somewhere, I can't remember where.

I guess that I'll just keep it to below 4k rpm and not boost it until I have reached the 500 miles, which should be within two weeks.

BTW, I have JE rings and JE pistons. Hey people, thanks a lot for the info.

There was a site where a guy was explaining hwo to break in a motor. It was something like, beat on it somewhat the frist 20 miles. then change the oil after 20 miles. he said by beatin gon it and putting more load on it it would help seat teh rings better as more force would be there to push them out or whatever they do. also chanign oil after 20 miles was to get rid of any metal shavings or what not that may be left over from the rebuild.

i wish i could remember the site. i thought it was posted on here once before

I heard from some rwd guys that to break in a qaife or maybe it was a kaaz lsd you drive it how you intend to drive it hehe as in you give it hell. Qaife practically dares you to break their lsd.
