Variable Nozzle Technology
Has anyone read about these? I just stumbled across it on How Things Work.com and it seems like it could make all other turbos obsolete one day.

I guess they have adjustable fins on the turbine side allowing the turbo to make the most possible intake charge at any given engine speed. Kind of like how a waste gate allows excess pressure to escape to prevent damage to internal components, the VNT turbos will adjust the vanes on the turbine side to achieve more boost early on, and to utilize more of the exhaust gas velocity at higher RPMs.

It looks like Mercedes has already started to equip some of their CDI models with this technology (primarily diesels at this point), but being DaimlerChrysler, maybe there will be some super turbocharged car out from DSM someday in the future. (And then I will wake up, eh?)

In any case, it seemed like something really interesting turbo-related and I thought I would share with the group.

it was a bomb, no wastegate the only control was the VNT

Most VW TDI cars also have a VNT turbo

Aerodyne makes a turbocharger called the Aerocharger that has a variable A/R. it's popular for turbocharging small engines like ATV's and motorcycles. from what i've read, they don't last very long because they are internally oiled and probably suffer from poor cooling.

Well, it was news to me. Maybe they will get it working better for the performance industry someday.

They are also referred to as VATN. Variable Area Turbine Nozzles. Yeah, it'a a great turbo, in fact it has a good Merit. Feels like a small turbo on take off but the the actuator closses to give you a feeling of a large turbo towards top end. No wastegate needed aswell. The only downside is, you have to oil it up w/ Turbine oil, not just motor oil. Every 10,000 miles I think, or was was 5,000 thousand miles. I have to get my book but dont' want to, ehehehe. I'll look into that once i'm settled in w/ my T-25 into a 420A. Have you heard of anyone putting a T-25 into a 420A before, if have, let me know!:thumbsup

The technology behind the VNT is really cool, the garrett vnt is externally oiled. the only drawback at this time is that the biggest turbo you can get right now is about the size of a t-28.
