58144, Exhaust Manifold Bolts backing themselves out Posted by Phat99Eclipse, Oct-08-03 04:23 PM
I have been boosting for about 40K miles and one of the turbo mani bolts broke off and another backed itself out entirely. I didn't use any loctite when I installed because I thought it would freeze them in there permenantly... Anywho... I am trying to get replacement bolts, but the dealership cannot seem to find the proper P/N's. :nono
Does anyone here have the appropriate P/N's or the P/N's for the ARP equivalents? I know that they are M8x1.25 but I'm not sure about the length... Also correct me if I am wrong, but aren't they also supposed to be Grade 8 Hardened Steel? These bolts all have about 87K miles on them and I want to replace them... Also I can't remember the torque amount for these, it's been over 2 years since I installed the kit...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.... Thanks in advance.

Bring one of the bolts to your local mom and pops hardware stare. They are more likely to have it than Home Depot or Loews. This is how I found the bolts for the caps on my cam shafts. I know, but the mom and pops bolts hold perfectly well for the last year and half.

yeah those bolts are a bitch. I used locktite for a while but those suckas will still pop out. So when I rebuilt my engine I studed the whole thing and no more bolts poping out. Well nuts anyway.

If you go to Satan ask for a picture of the 4G63 exhaust manifold set up. It's kind of hard to tell from the pic but get the smaller ones...I believe it's the studs for the top row. That's what I did...it's a little pricey though...I think I paid 16 bucks for all of them...and the guy gave them to me at cost too. He said it was ridiculous to charge someone that much for studs...LOL. I think RRE sells them too...probably be a lot cheaper through them.
Also the torque spec is 15lbs.

8mm hardened stud, washer, copper locknut.
Roadraceengineering.com sells them for $1 each, total $24 for all 8.
Put blue loctite on the head side of the stud only.

Or even better, get the ARP exhaust manifold stud kit for the LS1 camaro. it leaves you with 4 studs left over, but you won't break those suckers.
The bolt size is very common and easy to find. I buy them by the 10 back at Autozone. On the STAR kit, it's the same thread size and pitch as the downpipe-to-turbo bolts (and wastegate-to-manifold). take one of those out and go match it up with something.
