57367, fluttering bov Posted by jwhit, Oct-01-03 05:28 AM
I have a turbo xs type h bov and whenever I let off the throttle it flutters. I used to have the 3kgt bov and it did the same thing. I dont think I have any boost leaks and the car runs strong and idles good. I always thaught this was normal, but after searching I have read that it is not supposed to flutter. I have had the turbo kit for 2 years now and it has always sounded like this. I would rather hear a whoosh or a psst than a flutter. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Is this only when letting of on low boost or is it all time?

57381, RE: fluttering bov Posted by jwhit, Oct-01-03 07:05 AM
It only does it at low or no boost. I have read that this is normal and I have read that this is bad too. I just dont want to worry about a f-ed up turbo.

This can happen at low boost my HKS does it sometimes. Does that TurboXS BOV adjust with washers like the RFL?

Yes, but there are no washers in it.

I would try adding 1 or 2. How much boost do you run?

What kit are you running? Try puttng your air cleaner directly on to the turbo. May sound weird but it works.

I'm curious as to how this helps?

I have hear that also! heh I have no idea why it works but people say it works. I just put the type H on my car yesterday and its fluttering also. The 3kgt one did not flutter at all. Make sure you have a good signal to the bov, a direct feed from the intake mani. Do not tap off another line. I put a breather filter on my VC, then ran the pcv intake to my air filter and used the nipple on my upper intake (where the pcv valve was) for the signal to my bov. It worked fine with my 3kgt one, but I think I still need to tweak the type H. Does the type H come with washers already in it?
At low boost i get the wooosh from the bov but also hear a noise like a fruity clowns air horn, is that compressor surge?

Yes that might be a little compressor surge. How many washers are in your BOV?
|
57401, RE: fluttering bov Posted by jwhit, Oct-01-03 08:55 AM
I didnt put any washers in the bov, unless it came with them already installed. My signal hose is hooked directly into the intake manifold where the triple tee is, I dont have the egr or evap systems installed, so it freed up some vacuum ports. Will adding washers make the bov softer? My understanding is that it will make the spring tighter. If it is not going to harm my turbo I dont care about the sound. I only run about 7 psi.

Ya if your getting it now with no washers you if you make it tigher it will surge.

I am in the same boat. Ill play with the bov once I get home. Mabye I can find a softer spring at a hardware store to loosen it up. I tried unscrewing the top of the bov a bit to loosen it up but that made the bov loose vacume.

I am telling you If you mount the filter directly to the turbo it will go away. I know it may sound stupid but it works. try it it takes 2 min.:thumbsup I have the rfl - h @ 16psi. If it dosent work good luck to ya.

I don't want to put it there! x( heh
I have been tweaking my eic and type H for the last few hours. I cut about 1/4 of the spring and it was working well, but the piston was starting to rise at idle, so i threw a washer in and its perfect at idle now. The I don't mind the flutter, but the noise that sounds like a air horn is what is worrying me. I believe that is compressor surge and thats not cool. So far its working a lot better but I still get some of that horn noise. The 3kgt one was perfect, it never did anything like this. Ill try the air filter trick tomarrow. So far at this setting its holding 13 psi and friday I will be upping it to 16. woo woooo!

does your BOV have its own vaccum source, or is it teed off of another vac source? if its teed, try putting it to its own vaccum source. also, if its fluttering, the LAST thing you wanna do is add washers(making the BOV harder to open) cause its fluttering cause you arent opening the BOV up enough to blow-off like it should. id only add washers if its leaking under boost. if i spool up to 8-5 VAC and let off, i get a little flutter, but not too bad. it did it pretty bad when i had it teed off another vac source, but now it has its own on the intake manifold. i have the RFL too BTW.

the rfl is the same as they type H but its got some kind of amplifing horn on it. I put washers in because I cut the spring too much and it was opening at 20 hg vac. 1 washer in and its working at idle, and the flutter is almost gone. I am going to goto the hardware store and pickup a similar spring to the one that came with it and throw it in and try with the filter on the turbo.
jwhit: any luck with yours?

No not yet. I think I'll try cutting the spring a little and see if it helps. I only boost to about 7 psi right now and it flutters a little at that amount which worries me. I would try the filter thing but I really don't think I want my filter right on the turbo.

if you have the star kit and you get that turkey gobble noise.. putting the air filter on the turbo will get rid of this. Otherwise.. the type H is built for a minimum of 10psi and the flutter means you are not letting off enough positive manifold pressure to keep the compressor spinning. that is why I have always kept the hks ssbov. It has dual outlets.. one is smaller for lower boost and the other is bigger and stiffer for obvious reasons.

If you are only running 7psi, cut the spring a little. thats how you will get rid of the "flutter". you can always add washers if you up the boost and it leaks.

mine did the same thing. its definately the vaccum line imo, check it out...
get a T barb and cut one of your vac lines and run the BOV off that. it wont flutter, at least thats what fixed it for me. _________ 96 talon esi-t san clemente, ca

my bov is connected by a large vac line hooked up to where the pcv valve was, so i dont think its that. I am not really getting flutter, I am getting a lot of compressor surge or at least thats what i think it is. It sounds like an air horn. It opens fine at ~1 psi, but above that it makes the horn sound and its reeeeally bugging me because I think its killing my turbo. I am really really close to putting the 3kgt bov back on!

you guys arent blowing your turbos up...you have the vac lines wrong. pcv valve? thats not even a vac line. T barb it off one of the existing ones.
