5719, MX6 Intercooler ne good?
Posted by HadesOmega, May-30-01 04:52 PM
Went intercooler hunting today and found some starions and conquests but no intercoolers. I went to an auto wrecker place and they showed me a MX6 intercooler (didn't even know they had turbos) and it looked pretty beefy I found one of ebay, just wondering if it'll fit and if it's good?

Can't answer either of those questions...but one thing is for sure...

It sure is DAMN UGLY!

When I was installing my Starion, I had a lot of people come up to me and ask "is it a Greddy...a Spearco...?"

The aesthetics of a FMIC is half the fun!

Look here too:

I think ~$150 for this intercooler is fair...(dependant on condition)

Hey Jason, or anybody can help me out. Who should I take my starion to (real welder or exaust welder) and what do I tell them? I've seen the pic of a modded starion but still a little hazy. Also, I found out that I got an Audi IC, anybody know if it's worth anything to anybody? Got a 2nd gen side mount if somebody wants it too! Let me know I need to get rid of crap layin around here. E-mail if you want em like really cheap!

I don't think a regular exhaust welder could pull it off. Not that it's a particularly complicated welding job, but it does involve welding aluminum. Your run-of-the-mill exhaust welder may feel a bit uncomfortable working with such a "delicate" metal.

I recommend going to a full-time welder.

Exactly. You'll need a real all purpose welder to weld up the aluminum (luckily there's one right up the street if i ever need one.) As for how to weld up the starion intercooler I'd say look at a Greddy or star intercooler and basically copy the inlet and outlet locations. The top runs over top the intercooler and the bottom comes straight out the bottom of the other end. The starions location at the top is about right just needs and elbow facing properly. The bottom one needs welding up and relocating it to the bottom like the star/greddy. In all honesty it what ever way will make it easier for you to do the piping will work so there's some freedom. You'll want the inlet/outlet inlarged to preferably 2.25" (RRE sells elbows for the top and a straight pipe for the bottom will work). As for the MX6 intercooler I think I'd keep searching. Dont know how well it performs but as mentioned its butt ugly and doesn't appear to be as easy to work with as the starion (looks like a definate side mount job). Dont forget to mount the welding tab on the top middle of the starion.
