I was just curious who here has tried the Toulene/Xylene mix trick to up the pump octane?

What % did you mix and what were your observations on how the car ran?

I have two gallons of Xylene in the car right now but I am not going to be running it until tomorrow. Im going to be running about a 2:1 ratio

To all those who are going to say why not just use race gas? I also think I would prefer 100 or 104 out of the pump but I just wanted to experiment and see for myself.

why not use toulene? it has an octane rating of 114 R+M/2.

I havent read all that much about xylene so care to share on that?

toulene ranges from 5 bucks a gallon to 2.55.

My bro has a 30% discount at the paint store so this can mean nice things for me.

interesting how they say that the gas in california is "more powrfull" but we still only get 91 octane :P to them.

I mix toluene 3:1 with about a cup of marvel magic oil poured in.

I did have an injector get gummed up, but I don't know if that's related.

Ive run xylene mixes.

You should add small amounts of mineral spirits and tranny fluid to the mix as well. For every gallon of "home-brew race gas," run 100oz of toulene/xyxlen, 25oz mineral spirits, and 3oz of tranny fluid

the mineral spirts act as a cleaning agent, and the tranny fluid as a lubricant. this is similar to whats found in pump gas, and helps keep fuel lines from corroding and injectors from gumming up.

i ran 20% and 30% mixes, never more than 30% as Ive read mixed feelings about the how safe toulene/xyxlene are to run the clsoer you get to its "pure" form.


fwiw tho, the old turbo F1 cars use to run a mix that was ~85% toulene (the last ~15% being n-heptane, which has an octane rating of 0 - this helped F1 teams meet the rules limiteing race gas in the series, which dictated the RON octane rating, and not the MON or R+M/2 ratings). These were the F1 motors that would run ~50-60psi on 1.5L motors cranking out nearly 1000hp

most arent worth the bother unless you can get a good deal or dont have high-octane fuel available locally

I just put 20oz of MMO in, 10oz per each gallon of Xylene. I read through all the threads on it and it seemed people have had good results w/ it.

The reason for the Xylene over Toulene is because it isn’t on the federal watch list for chems used in meth production like Toulene is.

Also it has a higher octane. The highest octane I can get out of the pump is 91 where I live. So using a 2:1 ratio that makes my fuel octane come out to ~99.6

All in all it comes out to about 3 dollars less to run Xylene instead of just race gas. Not really worth it to me at this point but like I said I just want to try it out for myself.

my work has toulene and i asked my boss (who is related to me) if i could get some to sell to the guys on my board. he got all weird and was like what do they want it for. i told them race gas. he was relieved. ha ha. anyways. he said that toulene isnt the best additive because it makes engines run really hot. i dont know if you are compensating for that in the mixtures because i dont know crap about mixing gas and chemicals but i just thought i would throw what i know into the loop.

I can get 100 octane (unleaded)and 110 octane (leaded)about 3 miles from my house out of a pump. They are both $3.99 a gallon. Another great reason to have a fast car in florida.

Must be nice, I have to go about 15min away to get 100 for like 4.xx but I only have to go about 5min away to get 110 (leaded) for about 4.xx. I usually get about 6 gallons 110 and 10 gallons 91. Give me about a full tank of 98 octane.

But anyway, I drove it around on 24psi w/ zero knock (audible) timing all looked and felt good. The car actually pulls smoother through the rpm band. So my verdict is that it works.

I dont think that it would have from the Xylene. It would clean it out if anything.

on the injector thing it could have lceaned his fuel tank and lines and there for gummed his injector up from debreee...

Bill, I strongly suspect that was the case... it cleaned the fuel system so well that old crap got dislodged from the lines or tank somewhere. Anyways, the injector was totally jammed, it wouldn't even click when activated. There was obvious orange crud in the tip. (See far left one - cyl #4)



My fuel filter was about 45k miles old, so I wasn't getting much filtration, if anything at all.

In my opinion, its perfectly fine to run toluene/xylene as long as you have a fairly clean fuel filter and maybe take out the injectors to clean them if you feel any weirdness.

BTW we're not supposed to use leaded gasoline because it fouls the O2 sensor badly.

i run 2 gallons of toulene to every 10 gallons of gas and have excellent results with it
