5663, Well this has been a total frickin disaster... Posted by DarkOne, May-29-01 11:03 AM
The goal: Drop oil pan, redo return line and dremel out the hole....without removing the downpipe.
Status: Complete.
The cost: One broken off bolt in my turbine housing, one slightly bent wastegate dumptube that had to be manhandled back into place, one stripped oilpan bolt (have no idea how this happened.. think it was stripped when i took it out), One oilpan gasket, some skin, some blood, a missed day of work because after the bolt broke iput it all back together to fix some other time and was leaking exhaust so bad i was afraid to drive it, and a flange welded on the end of the downpipe so i could remove it to try and get the bolt out of my turbo. $35 for the oilpan gasket, $5 for a tube of high temp copper silicon sealant, $30 for the flange installed, $6 for cheapass oil to last me for another 400 miles until i'm due for a change, $6 for a tub to hold the old oil, and 8 hours of vacation time.
$82 and a missed day of work. Just to save a few drops of oil.
But hey, i got my oilpan out without removing the downpipe :-)

wooohooo. What is it with you and the downpipe anyway. I swear it was one of the easier parts to fit for me (maybe ours is different.

Nah .. i did it all already. i got the oilpan back on without removing anything... It was just a real pain in the ass, and the bolt that broke off in the turbine housing/downpipe flange made the downpipe leak..
I don't know about you guys, but my downpipe fits like SHIT. You've got to wiggle it this way and that, pry here, twist here, just to get all the bolts in it... As well as the fact that once i put the downpipe on, it was about 2" to the left of the rest of the system!
Hah.. it's okay now. I'm never doing that again....
Ugghh.. a definate example of why it is best to DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME!

was your downpipe ever cracked? that was the same way mine was before we put a new elbow in it. it sat about 3 inches off of the rest of the exhaust system. we cut it all apart though, lined everything up and tack welded it and now it fits like a charm. too bad it is really old, the metal is crystalized, and it keeps cracking in various places.

Nope, never cracked... i've been driving it everyday since Dec. with no flex section and a bad motor mount somewhere, not a single crack..
It was just all one piece.. i couldn't take the downpipe out if i wanted to, until yesterday morning when i went and had a flange put in.
