5604, reg or ball bearing? Posted by bustrblue1, May-28-01 09:50 AM
hopefully in a few month i'll be doing my engine. i plan on going with the NER kit, but i can't decide whether i want the bb option or not due to the $$. i'd like everyone's opinion on this. does the bb option really help that much? when i get my kit, i'm also getting a lot of other stuff so money's definately an issue because i was thinking about getting chrome piping among other things. thanks for the help

I'm no turbo expert, nor to I own one. But if/when I was going turbo I would go Ball bearing.

BB is mainly to allow the turbo to spool up a few 100 rpm's quicker. It will not effect the overall power made other than maybe some more in the midrange as it spools up quicker. If money is an issue, I would not worry about it.

I heard you can't rebuild a BB turbo....is that true?

Well according to Turbonetics at one time their single ball bearing turbos weren't serviceable (at least the bearing section). Not sure if that still applies. On the other hand they claim their ball bearing turbo's can withstand 50x the thrust loading of a standard bearing turbo. Also HKS and the others use dual ball bearing BB turbo's. the single BB is a turbonetics exclusive (which turbonetics claims the dual BB can only withstand 2-4 times the thrust loading of a standard bearing turbo). Also read from a reputable source boost will not come on any sooner (you have to use a smaller AR ratio turbine for that) but spool up will be quicker. The main reasoning BB were designed was for increased reliability in high boost applications. The quicker spool up and gains from reduced friction were side affects. If moneys tight I wouldn't worry about it).

Does anyon eknow if they are using ceramic ball bearings? if so cooling properties would also be increased.

The ball bearing option is cool. It has many advantages... quicker spool, less stress on the engine, and takes 50X the thrust load of regular turbos.
Wyatt said that mine spools up quicker then his did, and he had an RSR Cat Back, and I had a stock exhaust. It's the future for all turbos, and if you want more power, and that's what your going to spend your money on ( more power mods ) then I suggest you get this option. And I assume your going to be racing on the streets? :P If you want that extra off the line power, then this is what you want.
But if your tight on money, and your going to spend the money on building up the internals to make your car more reliable...then ya, save your cash.
