tonight I was trying to catch up to this hot girl from class. reason being I noticed her noticing me driving an eclipse. She was in a 03 civic.

Anyways I hardly let the forge psitons warm up before following her out to show her turbo powah. Spooled it and the car made a slight pop noise. felt it though the floor board. I thought to myself "oh shit"...I hope it is not the rings.

Drove the car home for the 5 mile duration. Car seems to idle fine. No misfire CEL, unlike last time with the cast psitons.

came home, car still idled fine. Performed a key dance, got a normal 55.

decided to cleanout my missing link, and swap in a set of fresh plugs. Old plugs look okay, but a bit black and not the usual whiteish/grey hue.

Will perform a compression check later this week when my GF lends me a hand.

Anyone else has similar experience with this? I think it might just be me mashing the throttle too far, and too much fuel was induced at that given moment, causing the backfire.

Moral of the story is I probably deserve the scare (which I really hope, and not a ring land) for being a pig. :P Oh and also I noticed my tranny pan is leaking a bit.

It is 4am, and I can't sleep. Especially with this problem looming.

Took the car out for a drive after reconnecting my battery. Key dance only yeild 12-55. Car idles fine. No weird misses under boost on the freeway. Damn those fresh 7E plugs do make a difference.

Anyways I thought to myself, I must be trippin. I got stronger slugs (pistons/rods) under my hood than the 4g63 guys.

I still will perform a comp test later this week...just in case :P

i bet you just backfired through the intake side. i've had that happen to me a couple times while i was running real rich b/c of of a bad ML. anyway, yeah it seems to rattle through the floor and feels real bad, but i'm sure it's fine. it might've been those old plugs, and the fact that the ecu dumps a lot of fuel before it warms up.

you have a good point there ken. Didn't think about how the ECU runs excessively rich during warm up.

I'll still do a comp test to make sure.

I only open the throttle plate about 1/4 of the way by wedging a socket on the swivel thingy. car was warmed till about 190* (datalog verified), and the fan turned on. Let it cool for about 1 minute, and started the test from cylinder #4.

Used a Compression tester without the plug extension. Cranked 10X, then took reading. Every cylinder checked was done twice, back to back.

Compression results are:
#1: 190
#2: 192-193
#3: 190
#4: 190-191

Looks pretty good on JE piston/JE rings with abour 1500 miles on it. oh ring gap was 21, or was it 20...can't remember.

I shoudl have comp tested at WOT (plate completely open), but I guess the consistency between cylinder is what I was after, which means nothing was damaged. Thus I can rule out damaged rings/ringland, and that is was only backfire. i'm sure the hot chick either got a good flame show, or was gagging from the unburnt fumes.

Anyone like to comment on this?

i like your compression #. around the same as mine on je 881 hehe.. now im not alone with 190-194 on all four.. hehe.. now i just need my car to start again. =(

Ok quick semi-off topic question.....how do you clean the Missing Link?

^ just put some solvent on the breather hole to clean it out. If its clogged it could hold pressure and give the map sensor a bad reading. Gasoline should work. The breather is a 1/32 inch hole on the side.


I don't think you need to worry about testing your comp at WOT. the motor isnt going to pull that much air durring startup anyways, 1/4 throttle should let plenty of air in.

Those are great compression numbers... I think I have the same setup and I HAD 170-175's across the board.

Are you running total seal rings?

If so, looks like the agressive run-the-hell-out-of-the-rings redline breakin works slightly worse than the nice-n-easy breakin.
