55669, How much boost on a SMIC? Posted by EclipseRST, Sep-07-03 11:48 AM
Hey guys, I was just wondering how much boost you could safely run on a SMIC - more specifically a 1G SMIC. I know XtremeRS is running like 13 psi on his. Does it take more tuning to keep your car cooler when running that high of boost on a sidemount? After my rebuild in the future I'd like to run about 10-15 psi and was just wondering what kind of issues I'd be looking at. Thanks.

with 90* outside tempatures, a 2.5" free-flowing no-cat exhaust setup, 8.6:1 pistons, and .94-.96 for oxygen sensor voltages i discovered that 14-15 psi is about the max you can get through a 1G SMIC using a S16G. anything more than that and EGT climb really fast. 15 psi is kind of pushing it in itself.
here's a thread from boston-motorsports that i have posted in.

yeah, with 85 degree outside temps, on a long 4th gear pull at 13 psi, my intake temps were 150 degrees. Some say thats not that bad really, but to me thats a bit too hot. If you live in a hotter climate, then i personally would not push 12-13 psi on the 1g SMIC. If you are in cooler temps, then 15 psi should be obtainable.

Is it true that the HRC sidemount is a little larger than the factory intercooler? I know from pics that it does look a little beefier wich would leave me to believe that more boost could be run on it. I believe HRC says you can 15 psi on their side mount.

yeah. the HRC SMIC is a pretty good intercooler. much better than the OEM 1G SMIC. it's larger and probably has a better efficiency. i wouldn't be suprised if someone got 280 WHP out of it.

I got 307 WHP out of it :)

And you were using a S16G? Damn...well that makes me feel better I guess. I just don't want to throw $800 away on HRC's IC when I might just upgrade to a front mount in the future. And Matt's prices for the piping are so pants-crappingly cheap I'd much rather go this route.

I'm in Illinois so temps aren't over 90 too often around here. I don't ever push the car hard during the day when it's hot out anyway so it shouldn't be too much of a problem. I was just hoping to be able to stick to it to some Trans Ams at the track at 12-15 psi. I figure that should be about enough to give them a good run. Thanks guys. And XtremeRS get going on that piping ;-).

Haha, yeah i'm gonna get started on it soon. Just got a few other projects to work out first :) I want the IC piping on my car just as bad haha..
